Congratulations to recent BTMM M.A. graduate Katie Donnelly
Katie's article, “Youth Participation and Media Literacy on The-N.com” was published in Studies in Media and Information Literacy Studies (SIMILE), an online journal published by the University of Toronto Press. Katie is currently employed as a research associate on the fair use media literacy project in the Media Education Lab.
Abstract . The N is an edgy nighttime network for teens that is owned by Viacom and currently available in 55 million homes. The network's website, available at http://www.The-N.com, offers teenagers a variety of forums in which they can interact with media and with each other, including message boards, games, quizzes, and exclusive web-episodes (“webisodes”) of their favorite programs. While The N's main goal is not media literacy, many of the website's features offer teens and preteens the chance to actively participate in their own media culture – whether by playing at media creation through mash-ups and games, or by deconstructing The N's advertising and programming on the message boards. Through this type of active participation, users can potentially acquire media literacy skills.

New Latin American Media course for fall 2008
0823 LATIN AMERICAN MEDIA/CRN: 092172
This class fulfills the GENERAL EDUCATION WORLD SOCIETIES REQ
OR CORE 'IS' REQUIREMENT, and can be used as a BTMM elective.
It is a lower division class.
From to the music of J-Lo and Shakira to the style of the TV
show Ugly Betty to Bart Simpson's bad Spanish (no problemo!),
Latin American influences are increasingly evident in U. S. media
and culture. The influence goes both ways: U.S. media and
culture have had great impact in Latin America. This class
focuses on Latin American media as key institutions within the
region and also as they interact with the United States.
Media systems are so intertwined with society that
understanding them requires understanding where they come
from, so we will look at Latin America itself first – where is
it? what are its characteristics? The class will then
examine Latin American media and the ways that Latin American
people have reacted to U.S.influence. We will also explore
the growing presence of Latino media in the U.S. and in
Philadelphia. Contact: Nancy Morris, BTMM/SCT

Study of health messages and North Philadelphia Latinos
“Interpretations of Health Messages among North Philadelphia Latinos,” a study of how Philadelphia Puerto Ricans interpret media messages about smoking, was recently concluded. This project was also called “Speaking of Health/Hablando de Salud.” It was funded through a Pennsylvania Department of Health grant to Temple from the money that the tobacco industry is paying states to settle health-related lawsuits. The study was directed by BTMM faculty member Nancy Morris, as Principal Investigator, with BTMM professor Renee Hobbs as Co-Principal Investigator. Over the course of the four-year project, SCT graduate students Dawn Gilpin, Melissa Lenos, Suman Mishra, Pamela Poe, Tom Polcari, and Silvia Valkova also participated in this research. BTMM students are working on a documentary about art therapy
This semester the students in BTMM’s capstone television
production course, “Producing and Directing,” are working on a
remarkable project. In partnership with the Arts and the
Quality of Life Research Center, which is based at Temple
University, the students are producing a longform documentary
program about art therapy, and the many ways in which art
makes Philadelphia (and the world) a beautiful place to live.
To make it more manageable, instructor Dustin Morrow, who is
acting as the executive producer of the project, broke the
documentary down into shorter segments, each focusing on a
different program run by the Research Center. In the course,
several small teams of students are working simultaneously on
different segments, which will be tied together at the close
of the semester into one cohesive documentary. Each
production group is led by a BTMM graduate student.
Not long after Morrow joined the advisory board of the Center
two years ago, he was approached by its Director, School of
Music Professor Cheryl Dileo, about producing a documentary.
Morrow, a passionate advocate of art therapy and arts
programs, immediately saw the emotional draw of the concept,
and the good that a well-produced documentary could do for the
Center in securing future grant funding. He also felt that
the project, because of the sensitive nature of the subject
matter, would pose an ideal challenge to his upper-level
production students, and would make a perfect fit for the
Producing and Directing course.
The students are currently documenting two programs: “Singing
for Tomorrow,” an innovative songwriting program for
inpatients with spinal cord injury at the Shriner’s Hospital
for Children, which helps children express their feelings and
facilitate their coping with their injuries; and “Hear our
Voices,”
a theme-centered music therapy program for at-risk youth in
the Kensington South area of Philadelphia, which provides
children with a creative outlet for the exploration of issues
relevant to their lives, like violence, family life, drug use,
anger management, school, and peer pressure. The students
will move on to documenting other programs in the latter half
of the semester.
For Morrow, the great reward of the course has been witnessing
the commitment of the student producers. “I have not seen
this level of maturity, responsibility, and passion in a
student crew before. I’m proud of them.”

Fifty neighborhood women spanning four generations will be interviewed.
