Photo of Yair SternYair Stern, '70, is the former Director General of Israel Television. He has been a guiding force in the development of Israel's television programming and in the management of that country's broadcast operations. Under his leadership, the news division received the highest journalistic award in Israel, the Sokolov Prize, for coverage of the war in Lebanon. His coverage of the Gulf War in 1991 garnered the Israel Broadcasting Authority Excellence Award. He has been a member of the News Committee of the European Broadcasting Union and of the Academy of the International Emmy Awards. Stern's involvement in community affairs includes serving as the Chairman of Freedom Fighters for Israeli Heritage and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Photo of David WoodsDavid Wood, '70, is the national security correspondent for The Baltimore Sun. He covers military issues, foreign affairs and combat operations, and has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist for national reporting. A journalist since 1970, he also has been a staff correspondent for Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times and Newhouse News Service. For four years, he covered guerrilla wars and conflict in Africa as the Nairobi bureau chief for Time. He has won the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Defense Reporting and national other awards. A Sense of Values, his account of the year with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, including three months of ground operations in Somalia, was published in 1994.

 

Photo of Robin MackintoshRobin Mackintosh, '71, Robin Mackintosh, '71, recently retired after 35 years as "a reporter's reporter" for CBS 3 Eyewitness News. During his career, he covered the major events affecting the Delaware Valley, including interviews with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Princess Grace and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. None of his work was more poignant than his live broadcasts for five straight days from New York City after September 11, 2001. His career honors include a Philadelphia Emmy Award in 1986 for feature reporting. He also received a Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association Award for spot news. In 1983, he was granted a special honor presented by President Ronald Reagan at the White House for a series on volunteerism. Lew Klein Award Winner 2008.

 

Photo of Bob PantanoBob Pantano, '71, is the creator and host of the Saturday Night Dance Party on Philadelphia's 98.1 WOGL; it is the first and longest-running radio dance party in the nation, now celebrating 30 years. Pantano also keeps the concert circuit hopping with his well-known Sounds of Philly show, which features some of the best local and national recording artists. In addition, he is active in community service initiatives, including playing a crucial role in the promotion and success of the Frank Sinatra mural on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia. Photo of Carl CherkinCarl Cherkin, '72, is vice president of communications for Philadelphia Union, the expansion Major League Soccer team currently building a stadium at the base of the Commodore Barry Bridge on the Delaware River, in Chester, Pa. He is involved in all of the "messages" the club generates, be it about its coaches and players, its relationships with sponsors and promotional partners or its community involvement. The messages are communicated through news releases, the web site and new media. Cherkin plays an integral role in a what he describes as a well-coordinated organization that works toward the creation of a fan-friendly experience in a totally authentic soccer environment—the kind seen at venues throughout Europe and South America. He is well-known from his time on The Ten O'Clock News on Fox29, a position he left in 1998. During his time at Fox and at WWOR-TV in NYC (1984-1998), he earned seven Emmy Awards and was nominated for 30. In the interim, he worked part-time at WIP-radio and was involved in a number of freelance projects, while working full-time as a marketing manager for a telecommunications firm. Philadelphia Union’s first-ever "First Kick" is scheduled for March 25, 2010, in Seattle. The home opener will be April 10 vs. D.C. United at Lincoln Financial Field.

 

Photo of Vince ManzeVince Manze, '73, was promoted to president of program planning, scheduling, and strategy at NBC Entertainment, a role that was specifically developed for him. Manze formerly served as president and creative director of the NBC Agency. While in that position, he created widely recognized network marketing slogans including "Must-See TV" and "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World." Lew Klein Award Winner 2001.

 

Photo of Sharon DunwoodySharon Dunwoody, '75, is the Evjue-Bascom Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as Associate Dean for Social Studies in the Graduate School. As a scholar, she focuses on the construction and effects of media messages regarding science. She is the author of Reconstructing Science for Public Consumption. She has served as a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer in Brazil and also has been a visiting journalism fellow in Australia and a guest professor in Sweden. Dunwoody recently participated in a five-country survey of scientists' perceptions of media coverage of science that was published in Science magazine. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and serves on its Committee on the Public Understanding of Science and Technology. Photo of Linda MunichLinda Munich, '75, is vice president of public affairs at Philadelphia's 6abc, a job she has held since 1991. She first came to the station in 1983 as the producer of various public affairs programs, including the once-a-year special Best of the Class series. She also previously served as producer of the award-winning Visions program, and was the producer and host of Good Morning and Perspective. Lew Klein Award Winner 2007.

 

Photo of Lorraine BranhamLorraine Branham, '76, is director of the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, a post she assumed in 2002 after 25 years as a newspaper editor, editorial writer and reporter. Before joining the university, Branham served as assistant to the publisher of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She began her career at the Philadelphia Tribune and also held top positions at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Baltimore Sun and Tallahassee Democrat. In addition, she was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University and served as a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes. On July 1, 2008, Lorraine will become dean of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

 

Photo of Paul GluckPaul Gluck, '76, is the president and executive producer of LiveUpdate MultiMedia, a comprehensive media production and consulting company. He also is an associate professor in SCT's Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media department. For many years, Gluck was Vice President and Station Manager of WHYY, the original and leading public broadcasting station in the Greater Philadelphia region. He previously held positions at KYW-TV and WCAU-TV in Philadelphia and WJZ in Baltimore. A multiple Emmy-award winner, Gluck has recently completed his second term as President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Photo of Diane HeeryDiane Heery '76, is a casting director with over 20 years of experience who is a member of the prestigious Casting Society of America. Since founding Heery Casting, LLC, Heery's casting credits include Invincible, National Treasure, Rocky Balboa, Marley and Me and Transformers 2. She has also cast for the CBS-TV series Cold Case and FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Independent films she has cast include The Woodsman and Shadowboxer. Heery also is a production consultant for independent filmmakers and donates her services to student filmmakers. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild and is an active member of the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, the Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Association and the Media Communications Association. Photo of Bill DalyBill Daly, '77, is senior vice president of post production at Warner Bros. Pictures. Daly began his tenure at Warner Bros. in 1990 as director of post production. He became vice president in 2003 and senior vice president in 2006. During his time with the company, he has overseen hundreds of motion pictures, including The Matrix trilogy, Ocean's 11 and The Departed. He is currently supervising Get Smart and Batman: The Dark Knight. In 2007, he was inducted into SCT's Hall of Fame. Lew Klein Award Winner 2007.

 

Photo of Brian MattesBrian S. Mattes, '77, is a Principal and the Director of Government Relations at Vanguard, one of the world's largest investment management companies. He joined Vanguard in 1984 as director of public relations and developed Vanguard's U.S. and international public relations functions before starting the company's government relations function in 2004. Mr. Mattes is responsible for representing the interests of Vanguard and Vanguard shareholders in Washington, D.C. He has more than 30 years of public affairs experience. Also active in civic matters, he has served for more than 25 years as a member of the Board of Directors of Horizon House, one of America's largest nonprofit providers of rehabilitation services to disabled individuals. Photo of Askold BukAskold Buk, '79, is a guitarist and composer/producer. He has scored numerous episodes of the PBS documentary Frontline, and episodes of ABC programs 20/20, Peter Jennings: In Search of America and Primetime with Diane Sawyer. Buk wrote and produced the score to documentary feature film Obscure and the theme song for the annually-televised Telling the Truth: The Best in Broadcast Journalism. His self-produced debut record Askold Buk was featured on the PBS series P.O.V. and on the nationally-syndicated radio show The Groove Boutique. Buk has developed a series of acclaimed guitar videos, playing and interviewing great musicians such as B.B. King, John Scofield, and Albert Lee.

 

Photo of William GreenleeWilliam K. Greenlee , '79, is an at-large member of the Philadelphia City Council, where he chairs the Law and Government Committee. In addition, he holds committee posts on education, ethics, financial, labor and civil services, public property and public works, public safety, rules, and transportation and public utilities. Greenlee previously served for 26 years as chief aide to former Councilman David Cohen. He is a member of the Fairmount Civic Association and is the Democratic Leader of Philadelphia's 15th Ward.

 

Photo of Marilyn LashnerDr. Marilyn Lashner, '79, is the owner of Media Analysis & Communications Research. She was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in communications at Temple. Her company provides forensic services including case evaluations, discovery assistance and testimony in trials throughout the U.S. As a specialist in English syntax and the content analysis of communications, Dr. Lashner's expertise has applied to cases involving libel, slander, invasion of privacy, plagiarism and identification of authorship. Her publications include the book The Chilling Effect in TV News: Intimidation by the Nixon White House, which was cited in an Appeals Court review of the FCC's Fairness Doctrine. She is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Scientists.
