Why London?

Samuel Johnson said this 200 years ago. And London is still one of the great cities of the world. Rich in cultural and intellectual life, London is a mecca for the student of mass media and theater.

Since 1969, students from across the United States attending Temple's London programs have met with the best people in British media and theater. It is also impossible to be in London and not make time for many field trips.

Internships

All Temple London applicants may apply for an internship in London. Internships usually involve two full days a week of unpaid work at professionally relevant British or American media or theater organizations in London.

Faculty

A full-time Temple University faculty member serves as resident director each semester. This individual comes from one of the departments in the School of Communications and Theater. There will always be liberal arts courses as well as communications and theater courses.

Additional British part-time faculty, often prominent professionals in their field, are used regularly. They are complemented by a generous sampling of guest lecturers. A permanent administrative assistant is also on hand to assist students and answer questions about housing and cultural resources of London.

Students and Classes

The student population of Temple London is small in number. Our typical student is a junior or senior from a college in the United States with an academic background in communications and/or theater. In a given semester, at least one quarter of our students are from colleges and universities other than Temple.

Students majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences will have no trouble taking the communications and theater courses we offer in London. In addition, we will always have several liberal arts courses available such as British Politics and Government and British Modern History as well as possible courses in British architecture and literature. Internships are found each semester at television, film, and video production houses; public relations and advertising agencies; magazines; and theater front offices.

Students may also look for a position on their own; for this, they will receive independent study credit.

Housing Accommodations

Housing for the Temple London Program involves dormitory-style accommodations located in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Some of London's most famous streets, academic institutions, and historic sites lie in the immediate neighborhood.

Each student residence hall has kitchen facilities with basic cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. You will need to supply your own bath and kitchen towels.

Rooms are cleaned and linen is changed weekly.
