Prospective Students
Financial SupportSeveral types of financial support are available to new and continuing MM&C students.
The Mass Media and Communication (MM&C) program offers a limited number of research and teaching assistantships on a competitive basis. These awards, which usually are continued for three years, provide a combination of professional research and teaching experience along with tuition remission for a full-time schedule of courses, a stipend (for 2008-2009 the amount is $14,848) paid monthly over the 9 month academic year, coverage of health insurance premiums, and payment of miscellaneous fees. Applications for these awards can be obtained online (in .pdf format) here or by mail from the School of Communications and Theater Graduate Office, Annenberg Hall 344, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 19122; phone: (215) 204-8409. The applications for awards to begin the following fall must be returned by February 1.
The Graduate School of Temple University awards many types of fellowships to outstanding students, including Presidential Fellowships ($20,000), University Fellowships ($14,000), Dissertation Grants (up to $16,000), and Project Completion Grants (up to $8,000). All of these provide full tuition remission in addition to the stipend. Future Faculty Fellowships (up to $14,000 plus tuition remission) are awarded to qualified students interested in a career in higher education. Smaller ($400) Dissertation Expense/Professional Conference Travel Grants are also available. Many MM&C students receive these awards, and the MM&C faculty are prepared to help interested students apply for them. Click here for more information from the Graduate School.
Each year MM&C students can apply for mini-grants to support research projects and reimbursement for expenses related to conference travel. Click here for more information. Many other sources of financial support for graduate students are available, including assistantships across the University; federal work study employment; state and federal need-based financial aid; educational loans; scholarships from public and private agencies such as the Ford Foundation and the Jacob Javits Foundation; employer tuition remission; and others. Many MM&C students work as adjunct instructors in the large School of Communications and Theater at Temple or at one of the several local colleges and universities that offer communication curricula.
