General Information about the Application and Admission Process

MM&C admits a small number (approximately 10) students each fall. The decision to admit an applicant is based on several criteria, including the applicant's previous degree preparations and grade point averages; performance on the Graduate Record Examinations (GREs); letters of recommendation; honors and scholarly achievements; and, very importantly, the convergence of the applicant's abilities and research interests with those of available faculty mentors. The goal statement is very important in determining the fit between the prospective student and MM&C faculty.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English; a score of at least 600 is preferred. All MM&C students are expected to be able to read, write, and comprehend and participate in graduate-level class discussions in fluent English.

Although not required, it is strongly recommended that applicants submit a sample of their scholarly research.

The deadline for submission of complete applications is January 1.

A master's degree is required for admission to MM&C (although it need not be a degree in communication). Students without a master's degree may wish to apply to Temple's Master's Program in Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media, which is specifically designed to be preliminary to the MM&C Ph.D. For information about the BTMM M.A. click here to visit that program's web site.
