Certificate of Insurance

All requests for evidence of insurance, either certificates of insurance or letters evidencing coverage, shall be forwarded to the Director of Risk Management and Insurance. Along with the written request, there should be a copy of the contract/agreement so that the specific insurance requirements can be met. Certificates of Insurance will be processed by the Risk Management and Insurance Department within 5 business days of receipt.

Important Reminder for Production Students:
Last date for request certificates of insurance before Thanksgiving break is Friday, November 14th, 2014 at NOON!!!
And before the Christmas break, the date is Friday, December 12th, 2014 at NOON!!!
This includes request for Rental Equipment!

Liability Insurance Limits & Requirements:

All Contractors and Vendors are required to provide evidence of insurance coverage before commencing work on behalf of the University. Insurance coverage must be maintained for the full term of the contract and any extension.

Liability Insurance Limits and Verification of Insurance Requirements

All Contractors and Vendors are required to provide evidence of required insurance coverage before commencing work on behalf of the University. Any questions regarding these insurance requirements should be directed to the Office of Risk Management (215) 204-8523. The University reserves the right to require higher limits from a vendor for a particular project or event due to the nature of the event/project, venue or anticipated number of attendees.

Note: Verification of insurance is not required for educational speakers/instructors for academic presentations.

Minimum Levels of Required General Liability (GL) Limits for Different Types of Vendors


(i) $1M per occurrence/aggregate

Types of Insurance Required

General Liability (GL) – required by all

Comprehensive General Liability, including:

Contractual; Premises Operations; Products

and Completed Operations; Independent

Contractor/ Vendors and Personal Injury;

Bodily Injury & Property Damage

Each Occurrence                                      per specified minimum limits

  • Workers Compensation (WC)(when required)

Employers Liability (EL)                                     Statutory limits for WC/ $1,000,000 EL

(WC and EL are not required if the vendor is a solo independent contractor)

(Automobile Liability Insurance is required when use of a vehicle is integral to the

Performance of the contract or project)

Certificate of Insurance Requirements

A Certificate of Insurance is required to demonstrate compliance with the above noted insurance requirements.

The Certificate of Insurance must:

  • Name Temple University Of The Commonwealth System Of Higher Education, Its Trustees, Officers, Employees and Agents as an

Additional Insured under the Vendor’s General Liability policy.

  • Demonstrate that insurance policies are underwritten by a carrier rated at least “A” in Best Key Rating Guide.

  • Contain a provision that a thirty (30) day prior written notice of cancellation shall be sent to the University.

Specific Language Requirement for Certificate of Insurance

The following language must be included on the Certificate of Insurance:

  • The Trustees of Temple University, its Officers, Employees and Agents are Additional Insureds.
  • This Insurance is primary as to any other valid and collectible insurance in force.

For any athletic or sporting event, the following language is also required:

  • This Insurance does not exclude coverage for bodily injury to any person while observing, practicing, or participating in any sports or athletic contest or exhibition sponsored by the Name Insured.

For events involving minor participants:

  • This insurance does not exclude coverage for sexual assault and/or sexual molestation.

The following language must be included on the Certificate of Insurance:

  • Temple University Of The Commonwealth System Of Higher Education, Its Trustees, Officers, Employees and Agents are Additional Insureds.  
  • This insurance is primary as to any other valid and collectible insurance force.

All policies shall be underwritten by a carrier licensed in Pennsylvania and rated at least “A” in Best’s Key Rating Guide.

The University reserves the right to require higher limits for a particular event due to the nature of the event or venue the anticipated number of attendees from a contractor or vendor for a particular project or event due to the nature of the event/project.

Insurance requirements for the rental/utilization of Temple University Facilities

Any organization that wishes to rent/utilize a Temple University Facility venue must show that it is fiscally sound and has the resources necessary to underwrite all risks associated with the event. Typically, this proof is provided by way of a certificate of insurance. The organization must

  • provide a minimum of $1,000,000 in general liability coverage
  • name “Temple University of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, its officers, employees and agents” as Additional Insureds
  • state that “This Insurance is primary as to any other valid and collectible insurance in force”

Uninsured organizations may purchase coverage for the date(s) of their event through the Tennant User Liability Insurance Program (TULIP). However, insurance coverage must be in place prior to an outside organization/group’s use of University facilities. 

The University reserves the right to require higher limits from a contractor or vendor for a particular project or event due to the nature of the event/project, venue or anticipated number of attendees
