Student Support Services Program
The Student Support Services Program is one of three admission
and retention programs in the
Russell Conwell Educational Services Center at Temple University. The program serves as an
intensive academic and counseling support program for students who indicate a serious desire to
acquire a post-secondary education, but who do not meet the standard
admission requirements as they may have low SAT scores.
The Student Support Services Program provides year-round counseling and tutoring activities free
of charge. It offers a six-week intensive Summer Bridge Program which includes skill
building courses in mathematics, computer technology, reading, writing, and study skills
as well as personal development workshops,
art appreciation workshops, and career counseling. The academic year program includes
pre-advising sessions, academic skills refresher workshops and personal counseling.
One hundred and eighty seven (187) students are served by the program. The U.S. Department of Education provides funding for the
Student Support Services Program in three-year grant cycles.
A student is eligible to participate in the Student Support Services
Program if he or she is a first generation college student or if he or she
is a low income individual who also is a first generation college student,
or a student with a disability.
ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAM
The Tutorial Component assists students in achieving academic success in all courses through
individual instruction. Tutoring sessions concentrate on the areas of business, computer
science, English, intellectual heritage, mathematics, science and the social sciences.
The Counseling Component provides a variety of academic, career and personal counseling
sessions to assist students in succeeding at Temple. Through individual counseling and workshops,
students will learn University policies, department procedures and other pertinent information that
will facilitate their smooth transition and success at Temple University.
SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM
Full-time students admitted to the Student Support Services Program are required to attend a six week Summer
Bridge program designed to help students make a successful transition from high school
to college. The program includes classroom instruction in the areas of English, reading, study skills,
library usage, math and computer technology. The Counseling Component offers workshops
as well as career
and university speaker seminars. The overall program provides a foundation of the academic and
personal skills necessary for success at Temple.
