Mission

The Temple University Upward Bound Program will prepare Philadelphia Public and Charter High School students for admission to institutions for higher learning and success in the collegiate environment through intense academic enrichment, a summer college immersion experience, enhanced cognitive and critical thinking, and extensive interpersonal development through positive social interactions. The programs will enable students to set attainable goals and build self awareness, respect for diversity and healthy relationships with peers, staff, and professionals from industry and the community.

What is Math Science Upward Bound:

The Temple University's Math Science Upward Bound Program (MSUB) is a comprehensive program designed to enhance the academic skills and preparation of talented high school students who have an interest in pursuing math or science as a major in college. While providing students with academic support and hands-on science and math experience and exploration, MSUB will also assist students in the college preparation, identification, and application process. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, MSUB provides a 6-week summer residential program on the campus of Temple University, and an after school and Saturday Program during the academic year. Once students are selected to participate, they remain in the program through their high school graduation.

• Completion of a Research Project
• Networking with students, faculty and professionals in the Science, Mathematics and Technology fields

• Assistance with selecting and applying to college
• College preparation
• Stipends
• Tokens for transportation to program events

Who should apply?

• Motivated eight, ninth, and tenth grade students attending or planning to attend Philadelphia Public High Schools who would like to go to college Students with an interest in a career in Math, Science or Technology
• Students willing to attend afterschool and Saturdays
• Students who have at least a "B grade in their Math and Science classes
• Students who would like a glimpse of what college life will be like and interact with current college students
• Students interested in participating in Science/Math competitions

What does the program cost?
Programming and trips are provided to students and parents at no cost. At times students may be asked to bring lunch or money to purchase lunch on trips.

Applications for Upward Bound are accepted year round and are reviewed as participant openings occur. Typically these periods are in mid-September through mid-October and January through mid-March for current 9th and 10th grade students. Current 8th grade student applications will be reviewed April through June. Applicants must be current 8th, 9th or 10th grade students attending (or planning to attend) a Philadelphia public or charter high school. An interest in a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field and no less than a "B" in Math and Science courses taken in high school to date are also required for MSUB applicants.
