Services for Students
The following is a list of the types of services available at the Russell Conwell Educational Services Center For more information on any of these services you may:
Spring workshops are held for future freshmen required to participate in the Summer Bridge Program. These informational workshops describe test and placement for the Summer Bridge Program, and provide financial information for newly admitted students. Six weeks of course enrollment, academic skill development and academic counseling are provided during the Summer Bridge Program. Academic skill development includes mathematics, critical reading and thinking, along with academic writing. Academic counseling skills include time management, learning styles, financial management, test taking skills, and academic advising and course selection. Summer Bridge Facts
Academic Enhancement Workshops These workshops feature faculty members, staff, and graduate students assisting students in utilizing and maximizing their academic strengths in the classroom, while gaining exposure to the culture and success strategies in collegiate courses.
"Review" workshops in learning styles and modes related to time management, critical reading and thinking, test-taking, note-taking, and statistical skills are just some of the areas featured. These activities assist students in understanding and learning their individual learning style and gain skills to maximize their performance.
Free group and individual tutoring is available in almost 50 University courses, including those described as "high risk" courses. Academic assessments assist staff in identifying students' strengths and weaknesses, as well as determine the type of services students require.
For undergraduates considering graduate school, particularly for those interested in college teaching, workshops are designed to assist with the GRE process, application process, recommendations, identification of graduate funding, etc.
Information and Referral Services Information and referrals to Temple University and Community services are provided to meet specialized needs of students.
Use of Computer Technology to Enhance Individual Learning MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access and other computer programs are available for students to use for note-taking, outlining, summarizing, presenting projects, beginning statistics, and related areas. Students learn methods to combine their course work with these various systems in order to create more efficient study processes.
Upper-class students are available to provide peer mentoring to new students and students in academic jeopardy. Mentors meet with students on a regular basis to offer guidance and support.
Extended test taking skills, and mathematics and writing development resources are available to prepare for the SAT and GRE standardized tests.
For a select number of students, faculty guided independent research is available. Students complete an original research project, teach an IH course session and attend student research conferences.
The Russell Conwell Center offers scholarship support to a select group of Temple University students who meet specific requirements (to be determined by the Scholarship Committee). These scholarships reward academic achievement (atleast a 2.75 GPA), campus or community service, and/or the persistence in achieving despite obstacles and challenges.
