Math/Science Upward Bound

What is it?

Math/Science Upward Bound (MSUB) is a federally-funded program which provides an academic year program and a summer program for high school students who are interested in pursuing careers related to math and science. Students attending a Philadelphia public high school are eligible to participate.

During the academic year, students attend classes on Saturdays and come after school, receiving academic support and college preparatory counseling.

Students conduct research, participate in regional and city-wide science fairs, symposiums and highly competitive essay contests. The program offers assistance with college and financial aid applications to ensure participants complete a competitive college application. Students also volunteer for community service in the Philadelphia area.

PHILOSOPHY

For more than a decade, the Math/Science Upward Bound Program at Temple University has provided academic and motivational services to low-income, potential first generation college students from any Philadelphia Public High School.  The program is designed to increase students' basic academic skills and motivation.  The intent of the program is to successfully prepare students for acceptance into their post secondary education.

VISION STATEMENT

The Math/Science Upward Bound will serve as the catalyst to post secondary education for Philadelphia High School Scholars.  We will produce academically, emotionally, civically and culturally well rounded learners.  These academes will then go on to excel in higher education.
