Programs for High School
Students
The U.S. Department of Education funds two
Russell Conwell Center programs for area high school students.
Eligibility criteria for both programs include: Family income of students may not exceed 150% of the
U.S. poverty rate and the parent(s) the student resides with will not have attained a baccalaureate degree
at the time of students' initial program application. Students are
recruited for the Programs from grades 9 through 11, but continue being served by the Programs
until high school graduation. Both programs emphasize academic
achievement, leadership development, and extensive college preparation.
Upward Bound Program
Students from
Thomas Edison, Simon Gratz, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and Kensington high
school are eligible to participate in this program. The Program features a six-week Summer Program in the residence
halls at Temple University, and an Academic Year Program. Intensive classes and workshops in composition
writing, mathematics, critical reading, science, computer skills, and foreign languages are held
throughout the year-long program. A full range of academic counseling services is provided,
including career, financial aid, academic and personal counseling.
Math-Science Upward Bound Program
Similar to the "classic" Upward Bound Program, the Math/Science Program provides
services to Philadelphia area high school students who have an interest in
majoring in mathematics, science, or
a related field in college. Students participate in a six-week Summer Program,
while residing in Temple's residence
halls. Field trips and site-visits to science-related
institutions are provided, in addition to science based mentoring
opportunities. During the academic year, the students attend Saturday
classes in writing, mathematics, critical reading, computer skills and foreign
languages, while they continue their summer science research and compete in
Science Fairs.
