Programs for Temple University Students and Freshmen Referral Programs

The Russell Conwell Center's freshmen referral programs are designed for high school students who indicate a serious desire to attend college and are highly motivated, but whose standardized test scores or high school records indicate that additional preparation and support are needed to succeed  at Temple.

Through the Summer Bridge Program, over 400 entering freshmen enroll in one of three programs and register for their Fall Semester Courses.  At the same time, the students participate in a six-week, five-days-per week academic skills and academic counseling program. During the academic year, enhanced academic course work, tutorial assistance, and academic counseling provide students with an additional supportive framework. Pre-admissions and Pre-matriculation Workshops provide new students with an introduction to Temple University and the Russell Conwell Center.

Current Temple students are invited to apply for the Ronald McNair Program. The Ronald McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to explore university teaching and research, while they prepare for future graduate school enrollment. The program provides assistance in Graduate Record Examination (GRE) preparation, Academic Internships and $2800 stipend during junior and senior years.

There are three Russell Conwell Center programs for entering freshmen (Note: All students are invited to participate in program activities)

I. Educational Services Component
The Educational Services Component provides Temple University undergraduate students with comprehensive academic support to enrich their undergraduate experience and enhance academic success.  All Temple students can utilize the services, which include academic assessment, group and individual tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic workshops and information, a six-week Summer Bridge Program, and referral services.  The six-week Summer Bridge Program is designed to enhance student’s skills in mathematics, critical reading, writing, and study skills.

II. Act 101 Program
Funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Temple University, the Act 101 Program is designed for eligible students who have demonstrated the willingness to achieve educational goals, and whose scores on admissions tests qualify them for Temple University admission via the Russell Conwell Center. The Act 101 Program offers a Counseling and Tutorial program, a six week Summer Bridge program, pre-orientation sessions, and a peer counseling program. Act 101 students are Pennsylvania residents who are selected on the basis of their academic potential, motivation and aspirations. The goal of Act 101 is to provide opportunities and support to full time students seeking a college education.

III. Student Support Services Program
Funded by the U.S. Dept. of Education, the Student Support Services Program assists students meeting two criteria: the students' parents have not received a baccalaureate degree, and the family income does not exceed 150% of the U.S. poverty rate (e.g., $22,200 for a family of four). Students  receive additional services in career counseling and planning, including site visits to potential career opportunities, as well as services in critical reading, critical thinking, mathematics, learning skills, etc.
