The Act 101 Program
PHILOSOPHY
Funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Temple University,
the Act 101 Program is designed for eligible students who have demonstrated
the willingness to achieve educational goals, and whose scores on admissions tests qualify them for
Temple University admission via the Russell Conwell Center. The Act 101 Program offers a Counseling and Tutorial program, a six week
Summer Bridge program, pre-orientation sessions, and a peer counseling program. Act 101 students
are Pennsylvania residents selected on the basis of their academic potential, motivation and
aspirations. The goal of Act 101 is to provide educational access and support to full time
students seeking a college education.
ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAM
The Tutorial Component assists students in achieving academic success in all courses through individual
and group instructional sessions. Tutoring sessions concentrate on the areas of business,
computer
science, English, intellectual heritage, mathematics, science and the social sciences.
Students are also encouraged to participate in leadership activities in the Act
101 Alumni Association.
The Counseling Component provides a variety of academic, career and
personal counseling sessions to assist students in succeeding at Temple.
Through individual counseling and workshops, students will learn
University policies, department procedures and other pertinent information
that will facilitate their smooth transition and success at Temple University.
SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM
Full-time students admitted to the Act 101 program are required to attend a six week Summer
Bridge program designed to help students make a smooth and successful transition from high school
to college. The program includes classroom instruction in the areas of English, reading, study skills,
library usage, math and computers. The Counseling Component offers group workshops and career
and university speaker seminars. The overall program provides a foundation of the academic and
personal skills necessary for success at Temple.
