Critical Reading: How to Read Strategically
Before reading:
- Limit background noise.
- Provide plenty of light.
- Sit up in a comfortable chair (do not read in bed).
- Avoid distractions-use answering machines, voice mail and "Do not
disturb signs" to let others know you are not available and to respect
your study time.
During reading:
- Preview the reading before you begin (read introduction, subtitles,
and conclusions).
- Read with the goal to understand the material rather than just to
get through the assignment.
- Think critically while you read. Be able to explain the author's point
of view, what was his/her motivation for writing (to explain, persuade,
etc.)
- Ask yourself what you want to find out from the reading.
- Read smaller chunks of material and try to make sense of each section
before moving on.
- Establish questions and read to find the answers to your questions.
- Read with a pencil in hand - marking up the text and writing "mini
summaries"
- Create questions in the margins.
- Form relationships among the materials (among the readings and lectures).
- Relate what you read to your own experiences, especially for difficult
material.
- While writing, translate the author's words into your own.
- Use the dictionary to look up unfamiliar words.
- Use a highlighter to underlined transition words, definitions or key
points.
- Plan to take breaks while you are reading.
