Workshop goal : To look at some strategies to study Math.

The specific goals of this Math course will be to emphasize an algebraic, graphic, and numeric approach to the study of:

  • The concept of function and using functions as models

  • Modeling techniques used in solving real world problems

  • Solving equations and inequalities in one variable

  • Polynomial, rational, radical, absolute value, exponential, logarithmic functions

Active learning is required to accomplish these goals.

Here are some strategies:

  • Explore The Textbook
    • Go over the course outline & the table of contents
    • Compare the course outline with the table of contents

      • This process helps you to develop a schema for how the material will be covered

  • Study your instructor
    • Your instructor is your guide to the material
      • When your instructor solves a problem, a presentation for how to approach and solve a problem is given
      • When your instructor answers a question, a presentation of how to reason through a question mathematically is given
      • Ask Questions!
      • Remember: The most valuable part of a problem is the solution, not the answer

      • Sit near the front of the class to minimize distraction and focus on the instructor

  • Learn the language of mathematics
    • To understand mathematics you must be able to use the mathematics

    • To be successful grasp the importance of learning definitions, concepts and notations

  • Find out about the support services and materials available to you

    • Support services include workbooks, study groups, self-help videos /CDs, peer tutors, professional tutors, instructor's office hours, on-line tutorials, and tutoring learning centers

  • Make the most of your class time
    • Concentrate
    • Listen to the questions and answers of others in the class

    • Take part in the class discussion

  • Make a friend in the class
    • Draw support and encouragement from one another
    • Study together whenever possible
    • Join a study group
  • Seek Assistance
    • Getting the right kind of help at the right time can be a key ingredient to your success in this course
