Workshop description: This workshop will explore how to prepare for studying a math course.

Here are some study suggestions and tips:

  • The key is to recognize that mathematics is a problem solving discipline.

    • Adopt some strategy that focuses on the problem solving nature of the course

  • Examine carefully the information given in the course syllabus

  • Familiarize yourself with the unique features of your textbook

  • Preview the textbook

  • Read the textbook before class
    • Check your understanding by solving each example
      • Compare your solution to the text's presentation
      • Place an index card over text's solution

      • Identify reasoning for each step of the solution

  • Attend all classes

    • The lecture gives the best indication of the emphasis of the course

  • Prior to each class, check the syllabus or reading assignment

    • Preview your text to improve your ability to follow the lecture

  • Take good notes

  • Review and edit your notes as soon as possible

  • Read your textbook after class discussion
    • Review material

    • Check for consistency with class notes and for understanding of previously misunderstood material

  • Make sure you understand all of the terminology used when solving a problem

    • Look up the meanings of any terms that you do not know

  • Write down questions while reading and doing homework

  • Take advantage of your instructor's office hours

  • Work with others in study groups outside of class

  • Become part of the study group and be an active participant

  • If a study group is not feasible, find one study partner in class
