POSITION: Director DEPARTMENT: Russell Conwell Educational Services Center COMPONENT: Upward Bound Math Science Program REPORTS TO: Director, Russell Conwell Center START DATE: Spring 2002
SUMMARY OF POSITIONThe Director has responsibility for the development and implementation of the Math/Science Upward Bound Program (MSUB) of the Russell Conwell Center. MSUB, which requires Saturday and early evening hours, provides an academic year and summer residential program on the Temple University campus. The Director is charged with ensuring the dispensation of all program services, including pre-college advisement, academic skill development, tutoring, MSUB course enrollment, academic persistence support, collegiate application and enrollment, and leadership development. The Director will write semi-annual and annual reports for the United States Department of Education (USDE), Russell Conwell Center, and Temple University, as well as grant and continuation proposals, and other pertinent reports. The Director will facilitate positive relationships with the target high schools, community agencies, and local and regional colleges; implement tracking and follow-up of student progress and college matriculation; and facilitate student’s development of science fair projects and participation in local and regional science fairs.
QUALIFICATIONS Master’s degree required in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Higher Education Administration, Math, Science, or a related field. Minimum of three year’s experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in teaching, counseling, administration, program development, or advising students in a college or high school setting. Experience with identifying and serving the needs of low income and potential first generation high school students, as well as an understanding of the affective, cognitive, and social needs of the target population. Leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as technological and grant writing skills required. Previous experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles to success helpful. Experience with the development of a science and/or math curricular desired.

SUMMER 2002 OPENINGS
The Math Science Upward Bound prepares high school students for future college enrollment. Services include science and math exploration (including completion of science research projects), academic support for their current and future high school curriculum, SAT preparation, and college counseling.
Science Research Coordinator (part-time academic
year and full time summer program) Summary of PositionCoordinate the initiation, development, and completion of student’s original Science Research Projects, as well as and the academic year science, mathematics and engineering projects. Assist students in preparing their Research Projects for local, regional, and/or national science and math competitions and science fairs. Network and connect students with Faculty, graduate students, and/or outside institutions who will assist them in exploration and exposure to a broad range of mathematics and scientific research.
QualificationsHolds a Master’s degree in science or science education. Three years of experience teaching and sponsoring science research projects with high school students. Experience working with a diverse range of high school students, including those from a low-income, first generation college background. Proven ability to motivate high school students. Previous experience in overcoming academic and/or economic barriers is helpful.
Nature and Scope of Responsibilities
Remuneration and TimeThe Instructor will work 25-30 hours per week during the 6-week Summer Program and 10 hours per week during the academic year. The Instructor will receive hourly pay of $22 per hour during the summer and academic year components.
Mathematics Instructor: Masters degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and experience with students of color and low-income students required. Bilingual ability helpful. Residential Tutor/Counselors: (5
positions): Completion of two years of college with a strong overall and major Grade Point Average (GPA). Demonstrated tutorial skills and abilities. Good interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and the ability to work with students from a diverse background.

Payment Over the course of the 6-week Summer Bridge Program, TC’s will receive free room and board in the Temple University Residence Halls and a $2,400 stipend (which includes related in-service training). TC’s also have the opportunity to continue during the 2002-03 academic year.
NIGHT MONITOR: Responsible Residential Counselor in Charge 11 p.m. through 7:30a.m. Summary of PositionLive in the Residence Halls during six week summer residential program (6/23-8/2/02). Assist the effective operation of the residential component of MSUB. Monitor student activity and compliance with University and Program residential policies. Assist the Counseling Coordinator with the overall operation of the residential program. QualificationsMinimum of two (2) years of undergraduate education completed with academically-strong skills; graduate student preferred. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students. Previous experience in overcoming academic and economic barriers to success desirable.
