SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Director has responsibility for the development and implementation of the Math/Science Upward Bound Program (MSUB) of the Russell Conwell Center.  MSUB, which requires Saturday and early evening hours, provides an academic year and summer residential program on the Temple University campus. The Director is charged with ensuring the dispensation of all program services, including pre-college advisement, academic skill development, tutoring, MSUB course enrollment, academic persistence support, collegiate application and enrollment, and leadership development.  The Director will write semi-annual and annual reports for the United States Department of Education (USDE), Russell Conwell Center, and Temple University, as well as grant and continuation proposals, and other pertinent reports.  The Director will facilitate positive relationships with the target high schools, community agencies, and local and regional colleges; implement tracking and follow-up of student progress and college matriculation; and facilitate student’s development of science fair projects and participation in local and regional science fairs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Master’s degree required in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Higher Education Administration, Math, Science, or a related field.  Minimum of three year’s experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in teaching, counseling, administration, program development, or advising students in a college or high school setting. Experience with identifying and serving the needs of low income and potential first generation high school students, as well as an understanding of the affective, cognitive, and social needs of the target population.  Leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as technological and grant writing skills required. Previous experience in overcoming academic and economic obstacles to success helpful. Experience with the development of a science and/or math curricular desired.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, administer, and evaluate the educational and counseling services of the Math/Science Upward Bound Program.

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff members in conjunction with the Director of the Russell Conwell Center.

  • Develop and write the science curriculum, as well as the mathematics and core curriculum, required for the Summer Bridge and academic year programs.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate program goals and activities for the academic year and
    Summer Bridge Programs.

  • Develop and maintain statistical data on the academic performance and progress of MSUB students in their high school and program courses, including grade point averages, test analysis, transcript analysis, tutorial records, and counseling records.

  • Develop and implement student recruitment and outreach policies and procedures.

  • Develop tracking system to monitor progress of alumni.

  • Submit annual and progress reports to the Russell Conwell Center Director, Temple University, and the U.S. Department of Education as required.

  • Develop initial budget and future allocations.

  • Maintain budgetary allocations and records on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

  • Write the MSUB continuation and four-year proposals in accordance to USDE regulations.

  • Represent MSUB at local, statewide, and regional functions.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Serve on appropriate boards and committees to advance educational opportunities for MSUB students.

  • Provide leadership within the Russell Conwell Center, including participation in staff meetings, program planning, student recruitment and enrichment activities, and the creation of a seamless network of service delivery through the Center’s educational pipeline.

  • Work with the Russell Conwell Center Director to develop external funding sources for Program enhancement.

  • Interpret policies and procedures, and participate in the establishment of guidelines for program development and implementation.

  • Communicate with students, staff, supervisors, department administrators, committees, community agencies, educational facilities, etc.…

SUMMER 2002 OPENINGS

 

The Math Science Upward Bound prepares high school students for future college enrollment.  Services include science and math exploration (including completion of science research projects), academic support for their current and future high school curriculum, SAT preparation, and college counseling.

 

Science Research Coordinator (part-time academic year and full time summer program)

 

Summary of Position

Coordinate the initiation, development, and completion of student’s original Science Research Projects, as well as and the academic year science, mathematics and engineering projects.  Assist students in preparing their Research Projects for local, regional, and/or national science and math competitions and science fairs.  Network and connect students with Faculty, graduate students, and/or outside institutions who will assist them in exploration and exposure to a broad range of mathematics and scientific research.

 

Qualifications

Holds a Master’s degree in science or science education. Three years of experience teaching and sponsoring science research projects with high school students. Experience working with a diverse range of high school students, including those from a low-income, first generation college background. Proven ability to motivate high school students. Previous experience in overcoming academic and/or economic barriers is helpful.

 

Nature and Scope of Responsibilities

  • Work with Program Director, Academic/Counseling Coordinator and other faculty to coordinate MSUB students major research projects and entrance into academic competitions, as well as augment the instructional component of the program. 

  • Coordinate advising of Math/Science Upward Bound students on a one-to-one and small group basis with faculty and graduate student mentors.

  • Supervise staff and mentors in the preparation of student research projects and competitions.

  • Facilitate discussion groups, workshops and lectures on the research process.

  • Identify student internship positions and act as a liaison between MSUB students and university, institutional, and industrial scientists.

  • Facilitate contact with personnel at other universities where students are interested in applying for undergraduate school admission.

  • Aid the Academic/Counseling Coordinator in advising students about college admissions.

  • Aid the Academic/Counseling Coordinator in advising students to explore and select academic majors in the scientific and mathematics fields.

 

Remuneration and Time

The Instructor will work 25-30 hours per week during the 6-week Summer Program and 10 hours per week during the academic year.  The Instructor will receive hourly pay of $22 per hour during the summer and academic year components.

 

 

 

Mathematics Instructor:

Masters degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and experience with students of color and low-income students required.  Bilingual ability helpful. Experience teaching high school students desirable.  Previous experience in overcoming academic and economic barriers to success helpful. 

 

English Instructor:

Masters degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in English and experience with students of color and low-income students required.  Bilingual ability helpful. Experience teaching high school students desirable. Previous experience overcoming academic and economic barriers to success helpful.

 

Computer Science Instructor:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and experience with students of color and low-income students required.  Bilingual ability helpful. Experience teaching high school students desirable. Previous experience overcoming academic and economic barriers to success helpful.

 

Science Instructor:

Masters degree preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Science and experience with students of color and low-income students required.  Bilingual ability helpful. Experience teaching high school students desirable. Previous experience overcoming academic and economic barriers to success helpful.

 

Latin Instructor:

Nature and Scope of Responsibilities for Instructors

  • Work with Program Director, Academic/Counseling Coordinator and other instructors to develop courses, which emphasize academic competency and proficiency.

  • Maintain student records, and submit a monthly report on student’s test scores, skill level, and progress reports.

  • Help student develop a plan for continually improving his/her academic skills and overcome academic barriers. 

  • Prepare and develop routine testing procedures for measuring student’s academic progress.

  • Tutor students when classroom performance indicates the need for more in-depth instructional contact.

  • Coordinate classroom instruction with the Science Research Program.

  • Plan student projects, which are an outgrowth of the classroom and workshop experiences.

  • Develops specific student test-taking strategies appropriate to content areas.

  • Administer and grade diagnostic inventories.

  • Maintain comprehensive records of student’s progress in skill areas and complete documentation as requested by the Program Director.

  

Remuneration and Time

The Instructor will work 25-30 hours per week during the 6-week Summer Program and 10 hours per week during the academic year.  The Instructor will receive hourly pay of $20 per hour during the summer and academic year components.

 

 

Residential Tutor/Counselors: (5 positions):

Completion of two years of college with a strong overall and major Grade Point Average (GPA).  Demonstrated tutorial skills and abilities.  Good interpersonal skills, sensitivity, and the ability to work with students from a diverse background.

 

Nature and scope of responsibilities

  • Tutor Math/Science Upward Bound students in appropriate academic disciplines.

  • Develop and maintain a positive flow of communication between staff and students.

  • Prepare and hand in weekly reports of all tutoring, advising, and residential hall activities.

  • Assist students with writing papers and developing their research projects.

  • Assist the Head Counselor with the organization of educational and cultural activities, as well as counseling and academic skills workshops.

  • Live in the residential hall during the summer portion of the program and supervise students during college tours, educational/cultural trips, and related program activities.

  • Act as a positive role model, reflecting the appropriate social, academic, interpersonal skills required for high school and college success.

  • Support, encourage, and counsel students in all phases of the program.

  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training workshops.

  • Complete duties as assigned.

 

Payment

Over the course of the 6-week Summer Bridge Program, TC’s will receive free room and board in the Temple University Residence Halls and a $2,400 stipend (which includes related in-service training).  TC’s also have the opportunity to continue during the 2002-03 academic year.

 

NIGHT MONITOR: Responsible Residential Counselor in Charge 11 p.m. through 7:30a.m.

Summary of Position

Live in the Residence Halls during six week summer residential program (6/23-8/2/02). Assist the effective operation of the residential component of MSUB. Monitor student activity and compliance with University and Program residential policies. Assist the Counseling Coordinator with the overall operation of the residential program.  

Qualifications

Minimum of two (2) years of undergraduate education completed with academically-strong skills; graduate student preferred. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students. Previous experience in overcoming academic and economic barriers to success desirable.

Nature and Scope of Responsibilities

  • Attend staff and in-service training workshops.

  • Develop and maintain the flow of communication between the Math/Science Upward Bound staff and students.

  • Maintain a professional relationship with students.

  • Assist the Counseling Coordinator with educational and cultural activities.

  • Live in the residence halls during the summer residential program and assist MSUB staff during program activities and trips.

  • Act as a positive role model in reflecting appropriate social, academic, interpersonal and self –motivational skills.

  • Support, encourage, and counsel students in all phases of program activity.

  • Assist in creating and sustaining a supportive learning environment.

  • Handle all emergencies according to University and program guidelines.

  • Keep student attendance and participation in residential hall programs, as well as records of health-related issues.

  • Supervise student movement and staff coverage.

  • Collect and distribute student room keys and food cards.

  • Supervise evening workshops.

 

Payment

Over the course of the 6-week Summer Bridge Program, the Coordinator will receive free room and board in the Temple University Residence Halls and a $2,500 stipend (which includes related in-service training).
