1. Which research credits should I register for when doing my dissertation and prelim?

Answer:

1. Register for Prelim Exam credits (799) when you are doing your prelim.

2. If you finish your prelim and then are working on your proposal, register for Dissertation Proposal credits (899).

3. DO NOT REGISTER FOR DISSERTATION CREDITS (999) UNTIL YOU HAVE PASSED YOUR PRELIM AND HAD YOUR PROPOSAL ACCEPTED BY YOUR COMMITTEE.

4. Make sure you take 6 credits of Dissertation Credits.

5. Whether you register for 799 or 899 (if you are working on the prelim and proposal at the same time) does not matter. Just keep in mind that these both count against the total number of research credits you can take before advancing to candidacy.
