APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The
Department of Psychology has several Ph.D Areas of Specialization
(Behavioral Analysis, Clinical, Cognition, Developmental,
Neuroscience, Social) and Emphasis (Developmental Psychopathology).
A student is ultimately accepted into an Area or Specialization.
However, all students complete the same general requirements
for admission.
Applicants to the doctoral Areas or Specializations must hold a B.A. or B.S. degree and have completed at least four minimally 3-credit courses in psychology, including one laboratory course. In addition, a natural sciences laboratory course, and a statistics course are required.
ALL of the following application materials MUST BE SUBMITTED TOGETHER in a single package. This package MUST be sent from you DIRECTLY to the GRADUATE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR in the Department of Psychology (address listed below).
1. Enclose a printout of your online Temple University Application for Graduate Study (preferred method) or a paper application. Refer to specific directions below.
2. Take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Aptitude Test.
The
Psychology
GRE
Test
is
strongly
recommended. Please have
the
scores
sent
to
Temple
University
electronically
by
ETS. If you already have a copy of your
scores,
you
may
also
include a photocopy with your application package, but please
note
that
you MUST have your official scores
sent
electronically
(allow
sufficient
time
for
your
GRE
scores to
be
available
to
us no later than December 15, 2006).
The TOEFL is required of all applicants who are not native speakers of English, regardless of the previous language of instruction. Applicants with an undergraduate degree conferred by an American university are exempt from the TOEFL requirements. Please note that the TOEFL examination is an additional requirement for international applicants.
It is not a substitute for the GRE. In addition, international applicants who are not native English speakers must take either the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the speaking section of the new TOEFL test (or the TOEFL Internet Based Test) offered by the Educational Testing Service. Please have the scores sent to Temple University electronically by ETS.
3. Request that official transcripts covering ALL college or university work be sent directly to YOU in sealed envelopes. Enclose the transcripts in the sealed envelopes with your application.
4. Arrange for three letters of recommendation (including two major professors) from persons familiar with your abilities and scholarly potential. Request that these three letters be sent directly to YOU in sealed envelopes. Have your recommenders sign their name over the back of the sealed envelope. Enclose the three signed and sealed recommendations with your application.
5. Demonstrate writing proficiency by preparing a Personal Statement that is part of the application (see below). The Personal Statement should include information about your relevant background and experiences, your research interests, and your goals. Enclose the Personal Statement with your application.
6. Enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard that we may use to notify you that your application materials have been received.
7. If you applied by a paper application make sure you enclose a check for the application fee of $50. Your application cannot be reviewed without your check or money order. Online applicants will pay via electronic payment during the online application process.
8. Enclose the three page Psychology Department Graduate Application Data Sheet (see link on the left navigation bar).
Appling online is quite easy. Just follow these instructions
1. Visit http://webserv.adminsvc.temple.edu/GradApp/Online.asp.
a. Click where it says “Application Fee: To use this application, you must have either a credit card or a bank account. Click here to continue.”
b. Follow the directions to apply online.
c. After filling in your personal information you will be asked to select a program. Select “Psychological Studies”
d. On the next screen select “PhD Psychology”
e. Complete the application, submit, and pay electronically. Print out a copy of the application to include in your Application Packet.
2. Return to the present Psychology Department Application Information page and, using the left navigation bar, download the three page Graduate Data Sheet that is required to accompany the Temple University Application for Graduate Study.
If you are unable to apply online, then you may submit a paper application.

b. Print and fill out application
2. Return to the present Psychology Department Application Information page and, using the left navigation bar, download the three page Graduate Data Sheet that is required to accompany the Temple University Application for Graduate Study.
Foreign Applicants must also:
1. Submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. However, if you received your B.A. or B.S. degree from an English-speaking American, Canadian, or British college or university, you do not have to submit the TOEFL score. Arrange for your TOEFL score to be sent directly to you in a sealed envelope and enclose it with your application.
To summarize, ALL application materials MUST BE SUBMITTED TOGETHER in a single package to the Department of Psychology. We will not consider applications that are not submitted according to these instructions. Please have recommendations, and transcripts sent in sealed envelopes directly to you and enclose them along with your Temple University Application for Graduate Study, Department of Psychology Data Sheet, your Personal Statement, a copy of your GRE (and TOEFL, if needed) scores, a self-addressed stamped postcard, and if you applied by paper application a $50 check or money order made out to Temple University. Individuals interested in applying to the doctoral degree program are encouraged to visit Temple University to acquire a first-hand sense of the Department and the University. For applicants to the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program, appointments to visit campus will be made for those applicants invited for interview (we cannot accommodate visits by all clinical applicants). For all other applicants, to make an appointment, contact either the Graduate Admissions Chair of the Area of interest, the Director of the Area of interest, or one of the specific faculty of the Area or Specialization of interest. APPLICATION DEADLINES
Persons applying for Ph.D. training in any of the Areas or Specializations must submit all completed application materials by December 15. Students are formally admitted to begin the doctoral program in the Fall Semester.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
Applicants accepted for admission are automatically considered for financial support and will be notified by the Department of Psychology of the outcome of this process.
Financial support is available to doctoral students through research or teaching assistantships, fellowships, scholarships, and outside grants. University support ranges up to $20,000 for the academic year, in addition to free tuition. Summer fellowships and assistantships are also available.
Entering
assistantships
in
2007-2008 paid a basic academic year stipend of $15,122, and
this was accompanied by a full tuition scholarship
(approximately
$15,000)
and health insurance coverage. University fellowships are
more competitive and carry stipends of $20,000
plus
tuition
remission, while Presidential Fellowships are $20,000 plus
tuition remission. Stipends for assistantships
and
fellowships
usually increase approximately 3% at the beginning of
each
academic year.
