Distance learning courses and programs must be held to a high level of scrutiny to combat the perception that online courses and programs are less rigorous. Temple University must also be prepared to demonstrate that its online courses and programs are in compliance with external guidelines and regulations including the U.S. and Pennsylvania departments of education, Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Americans with Disabilities Act and others.
During Spring 2012, the Distance Learning Standards Advisory Committee, comprised of faculty and administrators, was formed to recommend research-based guidelines for use by school and college curriculum committees and academic administrators in evaluating distance/online courses. The committee was also asked to develop guidelines and criteria for faculty teaching online courses and students participating in them.
