The Beasley School of Law received a grant for $1,000,345 to promote its Rule of Law program and human rights in the People's Republic of China. In part this grant is being used to fund Temple's Master of Laws (LLM), which is run jointly with Tsinghua University Law School in Beijing.

Robin Kolodny, associate professor of political science at the College of Liberal Arts, received a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom during the 2008-09 academic year. She will study the function of professional political party staff and political consultants in advanced and recently established democracies.

David Baron, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, was invited as the keynote presenter for World Mental Health Day in Singapore on October 18th. He also gave a lecture to the Singapore Institute of Mental Health and consulted with the Chief of Psychiatry for the Singapore Military on ADHD in adults.

Adelaide Ferguson, interim vice president of International Affairs; Eleanor W. Myers, associate professor at Beasley School of Law; and Mo Zhang, associate professor at Beasley School of Law presented “Temple University Law School’s Rule of Law Program in China: Capacity Building, Methods and Results” at the national meeting of the Commission on International Programs for the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) held July 14-16 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Temple President Ann Weaver Hart was the moderator.
Enrique Hernandez, Abraham Roth Professor and chair of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the School of Medicine, presented “Teaching Colposcopy for the Detection of Precancerous and Cancerous Lesions of the Cervix” in July, while he was a visiting professor at Dubai General Hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Enrique Hernandez, Abraham Roth Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine, lectured on the surgical management of endometrial cancer and on the conservative management of young women with endometrial cancer who want to conserve their fertility, at the sixth World Congress in Gynecologic and Breast Cancer, held May 27 through 30 in Toluca, Mexico.
Enrique Hernandez, Abraham Roth Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the School of Medicine, conducted a presentation on cervical cancer and was a visiting professor at the American British Cowdray Medical Center on May 30, in Mexico City.
Ram Mudambi, professor and chair for general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, presented “The smile of value creation: Location and control in knowledge-intensive industries,” at the Nordic Workshop in International Business, held at Uppsala University in Sweden on May 29. On May 30, he was a Ph.D. opponent to Ciara Sutton at the Stockholm School of Economics, Nobel Hall, on the topic, “Foreign Indirect Investment in the Venture Capital Industry: A study of foreign limited partners’ impact on Venture Capital firms in Sweden.” Earlier this year, he acted as an expert commentator at the workshop on “Internationalization and externalization processes of international business operations” at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark on March 10-11.

Kim Cahill, director of the Temple Center for International Business Education and Research and the Institute of Global Management Studies at the Fox School of Business, chaired a panel session on business outreach at the Strategic CIBER Planning and Evaluation Conference, held at Temple University during the week of April 7.
The Center for International Business Education and Research held the ninth annual International Business Research Forum on International Sourcing in collaboration with Duke University’s CIBER, from April 3–5. The forum was co-hosted by Ram Mudambi, associate professor and department chair of general and strategic management at the Fox School of Business, and Masaaki “Mike” Kotabe, professor of international business and marketing at the Fox School of Business, and was organized by Kim Cahill, CIBER director.
Arvind Phatak, executive director of the Temple Center for International Business Education and Research and the Institute of Global Management Studies at the Fox School of Business, was a coordinator and discussant on “Micro-response to Macro Shifts: Does change in the U.S. international position in the world with respect to values and global citizenship alter U.S. international business training needs?” at the Strategic CIBER Planning and Evaluation Conference, held at Temple University during the week of April 7.

Norman Baglini, senior lecturer at the Fox School of Business, Katherine Nelson, instructor at the Fox School of Business, and Donald Wargo, lecturer at the Fox School of Business, gave a lecture on Ethics "Institutional Impediments to Ethics: Doing Real World Ethics Under Threat, Coercion and Risk," at Oxford University on March 26.
Kim Cahill, director of the Center for Business and Education Research, and Nicole DeSilvis, adjunct professor of international business at the Fox School of Business, presented on the Fox School’s undergraduate international business capstone at NASBITE International's 21st annual conference in Washington, D.C. on Friday, March 7. Their presentation highlighted the curriculum development and outreach component of this innovative practicum.
T.L. Hill, Enterprise Management Consulting Practice director at the Fox School of Business, presented “Strategic Market Entry to the U.S.” at the UK Trade and Investment conference on “Winning Business in North America,” held March 11, in Guildford, United Kingdom.

William R. Dubin, of psychiatry and behavioral science at the School of Medicine, co-authored “Violence Toward Mental Health Professionals in the fall 2008 issue of Textbook of Violence Assessment and Management.
A.R.M. Imtiyaz, of the Department of Political Science at the College of Liberal Arts, co-authored a paper titled “Ethno-Political Conflict in Sri Lanka,” which was published in the fall 2008 issue of Journal of Third World Studies.

Molefi Kete Asante, professor in the Department of African American Studies at the College of Liberal Arts, has been selected chairman of the United States Committee for the Third Festival of World Black Arts. The festival will be held in Dakar, Senegal from December 1-14, 2009. Fellow Temple African American studies professor Ama Mazama is also on the committee.

Joyce Lindorff, associate professor of keyboard at the Boyer College of Music and Dance, recorded a solo harpsichord recital and interview in the studios of Radio Television Hong Kong on Nov. 24, 2008 that was broadcasted on Jan. 25 and Jan. 30 in Hong Kong, China.

David Baron, chair of psychiatry at the School of Medicine, delivered the keynote address before the Singapore Parliament and was honored for his work on mental health issues at the World Mental Health Day event on Oct. 18.

Albert Wertheimer, professor of pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, received the Andre Bedat Award on Aug. 30. The award has been presented every two years to an outstanding pharmacist practitioner who has made significant contributions to pharmacy at the international level.

Robert J. Reinstein, outgoing dean of the Beasley School of Law and vice president of international programs at Temple, has been awarded a 2008 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), the organization's highest award for career contributions to furthering international education at institutions in public higher education.

Ahmed M.S. Soliman, professor and associate chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the School of Medicine, was invited to the first International Videostroboscopy workshop held at the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 10.
Ahmed M.S. Soliman, professor and associate chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the School of Medicine, was invited for the third consecutive year to the third International Pediatric Airway Course, held at the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on March 11 and 12. This is, in part, a continuation of the Chevalier Jackson Bronchoesophagology course he ran at Temple for many years.
Jessica Winegar, assistant professor of anthropology, was awarded the Albert Hourani Book Award for 2007 by the Middle East Studies Association for her recent book, Creative Reckonings: The Politics of Art and Culture in Contemporary Egypt (Stanford University Press, 2006). The award, established in 1991, recognizes outstanding publishing in Middle East studies.
The Fox School of Business was ranked fourth in the world for international business research productivity in a recent study conducted by the Asia Pacific Journal of Management. Also, several of the school’s faculty members were identified as being among the most prolific authors in the field: Mike Kotabe, professor of international business and marketing; Ram Mudambi, associate professor and department chair of general and strategic management; Arvind Parkhe, professor of general and strategic management; and David Reeb, associate professor of finance.

Elizabeth S. Bolman, of the Tyler School of Art, was awarded the College Art Association/Heritage Preservation Award for Distinction in Scholarship and Conservation. Bolman was recognized for her work on the conservation of the wall paintings in the Red Monastery, a late-antique basilica near Sohag, Egypt, which resulted in placement of the site on the World Monuments Fund endangered list.
