Welcome to the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at Temple University. Located on a beautiful campus in the historic city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, IELP offers English as a second language courses to non-native speakers of English who wish to improve their English language skills for the purpose of seeking a university degree in the United States, for employment reasons, or everyday life skills.
The teaching and administrative staff at IELP understands that each learner has specific language needs and therefore has developed many special programs to address those requests:
- For students interested in improving their basic language skills, the IELP offers small, year-round English classes for many proficiency levels. The program teaches all the language skills and gives students options for their elective and cultural education classes. One of the most popular elective courses available is Business English.
- International students who are preparing for university admission in the United States, are encouraged to enroll in Access Temple which requires a higher level of English proficiency and serves as a gateway into Temple University. These students will be able to simultaneously study in the Intensive English Language Program and take a credit-bearing Temple University course in an academic area of their choice.
- Teaching Assistants who are non-native speakers of English are encouraged to take advantage of the International Teaching Assistants (ITA) program which assesses and trains all international instructors who need to be certified in English prior to assuming classroom teaching responsibilities.
- Students enrolled in the IELP have the opportunity to take part in the Conversation Partners Program which connects IELP students with conversation partners from Temple. The program is known for quickly enhancing communicative competence and forging long-lasting friendships.
