Laura Carnell Professorship

Established in 1985 by the Temple University Board of Trustees, Laura Carnell professorships recognize faculty who have distinguished themselves in research, scholarship, the creative arts and teaching. They honor Temple University's first dean, Laura H. Carnell, who worked alongside founder Russell H. Conwell from 1893 until his death in 1925, most of that time as Temple's chief administrator. Known for her tremendous energy, dedication and compassion, she was a prudent manager and innovative leader who helped thousands of students make a better life for themselves and their families.

Laura Carnell was dean of Temple University and organized each of the eleven professional schools at Temple University. Formerly a teacher in Philadelphia public schools, Carnell both taught in the Women's Department and took classes until she received her Bachelor of Arts in 1898. Throughout her time as Dean of the university, Carnell never stopped teaching. She took Temple University's commitment to community involvement very seriously and served on numerous volunteer organizations throughout Philadelphia. Carnell's successful tenure as dean earned her an honorary doctorate of literature and, several years later, the title of associate president. Today, Carnell's commitment is recognized by Carnell Hall and the Laura Carnell professorships at Temple University.
