Temple University invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean for the Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry.
Located in Philadelphia, the Kornberg School of Dentistry was established in 1863 as the Philadelphia Dental College and became part of Temple University in 1907, making it the second oldest dental school in continuous existence in the country. Known for its excellence in clinical dentistry, approximately 125 students enroll in the freshman class each year. The School enjoys full accreditation from the American Dental Association.
The School of Dentistry has remarkable promise for future growth. Its mission is to provide excellence and innovation in the education and continued development of clinically competent general dentists and specialists, the provision of high quality oral health care services and preventive programs to the community, and the pursuit of scholarly activities and research leading to new scientific discoveries in dentistry. The School of Dentistry is committed to the dissemination and application of that knowledge toward the health and well being of the diverse Philadelphia regional community. Fifty five full time faculty provide instruction in the School's seven departments of public health sciences, endodontology, oral maxillofacial pathology medicine and surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontology and oral implantology, and restorative dentistry offer a four year pre-doctoral program leading to the D.M.D. degree. The School's fully accredited graduate specialty programs include orthodontics, periodontics, and endodontics, as well as advanced education in general dentistry (AEGD). The school, located on the Health Sciences Campus, is situated in a densely populated section of Philadelphia, providing a rich kaleidoscope of clinical experiences for dental students. The dean, supported by a Board of Visitors comprised of alumni and leaders in the profession and the field, reports to the Provost.
The candidate will be expected to lead the School in the development and support of strong educational, clinical and research programs appropriate to the school's mission, and to provide academic leadership to insure that the teaching program reflects new advances in dental research and technology. The candidate should have the ability to generate a clear, distinctive and specific vision of the future and possess the communication and management skills necessary to lead. Candidates should possess a leadership style that fosters collaboration within a complex health sciences environment. Candidates should also demonstrate strong fund-raising skills, with an interest in recruiting new and aiding current faculty who conduct funded research, and a commitment to a culturally diverse academic environment.
Candidates for this position must have an earned terminal degree from an ADA-accredited institution or equivalent, or a terminal degree in a discipline directly relevant to dentistry. Candidates must also have academic qualifications commensurate with senior academic rank, a record of scholarly contributions, and successful management experience in a complex institutional environment that includes an academic medical center. The ability to recruit and retain an outstanding faculty, a collaborative management style, a propensity for fundraising, and a commitment to enhancing diversity in all areas of the university community are essential.
