Choosing a Major/Career
Career Communities are a new way of working with the Career Center based on industries and career fields. By indicating the community of interest to you in the OwlNetwork on your Academic Profile and Settings tab, you’ll receive information and targeted announcements about events, organizations, and job/internship opportunities that fall into these areas.
The Career Communities are:
- Arts (Performing & Visual)
- Biotech, Pharmaceutical
- Business Services, Banking, Financial Services, Marketing, Retail, Sales
- Communications, Media, Advertising, Design
- Engineering, Information Technology
- Government, Non-Profit
- Health, Human Services
- Hospitality, Tourism, Sports, Recreation
- Law, Legal Services
- Science, Research
For example, if you’re interested in Communications, select the Communications/Media/Advertising/Design Career Community. This will expose you to communication roles in the Media industry and other industries with communication positions you may not have known about. We encourage you to select up to 3 communities, including communities outside of your major and/or school or college. Think of each community as an opportunity to explore your professional interests!
Unsure Of What You Want To Do?
If you are unsure, talk with a career coach who can help you assess your personal qualities, evaluate the information you have collected, suggest additional resources, and guide you through the decision-making process.
If you want to get started right away, complete FOCUS-2 and evaluate your personal qualities and explore career and study options that are most compatible with your personality, interests and skills.
What Can I Do With My Major?
The site WhatCanIDoWithThisMajor.com has a wealth of information to share about major specific careers options and paths.
Keep in mind that the information sheets and options are representative of typical career paths associated with each major and not a comprehensive list. Your major is a starting point and not a prescription for a narrow list of employment opportunities. By taking a variety of courses and gaining experience outside of the classroom, you have the opportunity to develop transferable skill sets, highly desired by employers.
