Cameroon, Africa HIV Screening—Professor of Nursing Frances Ward provided primary health-care and HIV screening in Foumban as part of a faculty-student exchange with the School of Nursing in Bafoussam
Health Care Around the Globe—Clara Haignere's Public Health in Costa Rica summer abroad program provided health education in Costa Rica; last year 19 medical students traveled to El Salvador (saw close to 540 patients); the Haiti Club in the Kornberg School of Dentistry has been travelling to Haiti for past 10 years; and for the past four years, several medical students have helped in Tanzania
New Fox School and STHM Master’s Program in Singapore—launch of four executive master’s programs in 2011
Expansion of International Affairs—addition of an associate director for Global Partnerships and Relations and an assistant director for Global Programs

Increased TUJ Career Placement—job placement for 94% of Japanese graduates and 89% of all students (Japanese universities place 80 – 85% of graduates)
National Development Planning Agency of Indonesia (BAPPENAS) Partnership—TUJ is one of only four universities in Japan to partner for newly-created Staff Enhancement Program

Five & Fit Fights Obesity—funded by the Deerbrook Charitable Trust, this Intergenerational Center program places adults age 50 and older in volunteer roles to help prevent childhood obesity
Collaborative on Community Integration—Mark Salzer, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences (CHPSW), is directing this new initiative to eliminate the barriers that prevent the mentally ill from becoming contributing members of society

Northeast Tree Tenders—non-profit community group founded by Hasan Malik, an engineering junior, to plant trees and restore green cover in Northeast Philadelphia
Urban Roots—Temple seniors Alex McNeil (president, Project EDU), Eric Trumbower (president, Fox School's Entrepreneurial Student Association) and Yuan Huang (president of Temple Community Gardens) founded this organization to teach children from North Philadelphia about gardening
Recycled Lawn Chairs—120, new, 100% recycled lawn chairs have been placed throughout the campus to encourage students to study and socialize outdoors

Increased Research Funding for College of Science and Technology (CST)—increased by 99% over the three-year period from $7.184M in Fiscal Year July 2006-June 2007 to $14.296M in Fiscal Year July 2009-June 2010, averaging a 26% increase per year
Number of Undergraduate Majors Participating in Research Increased by 128%—undergraduates enrolled in independent study classes and participating in research grew from 120 in Academic Year 2006-07 to 273 in Academic Year 2009-10
Increase in Research Awards in FY10 in College of Liberal Arts—by approximately 50% as compared to FY07
MacArthur Foundation Award—Psychology Professor Laurence Steinberg was awarded $3 million in support of his continuing research on developmental adolescent psychology as it relates to the juvenile justice system
Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers—Jennifer Cromley, assistant professor of educational psychology, received the highest national honor bestowed on early career faculty in STEM—science, technology, engineering and math disciplines

Umami: The Fifth Taste—Associate Professor of Biology Greg Smutzer designed a simple test to measure the four basic human tastes; sweet, salty, sour, bitter and a newly found taste, "umami"
"Sanctified"—A Musical—Associate Professor of Choral Music Education Rollo Dilworth wrote the music for a new gospel musical comedy, "Sanctified," which played at the Lincoln Theater in Washington, D.C.
Dental School NIH Funding—to develop a new genetically engineered virus to fight infection of root canals in collaboration with renowned J. Craig Venter Institute
Enhanced Drug Discovery Research at Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research— interdisciplinary collaboration across university to understand disease processes and develop new therapeutic agents
Energy Commercialization Institute Grants for Clean Energy Infrastructure—Assistant Engineering Professor Dmitri Vainchtein for efficient and large-scale production of hydrogen; and Assistant Engineering Professor Svetlana Neretina for large-scale fabrication of printable hybrid solar cells
Inventors and Innovators Alliance—drawing from his success with his company Malo Traders, designed to help Malian rice farmers, Fox School student and social entrepreneur Mohamed Ali Niang, was selected as one of 14 U.S. students to be one of the first student ambassadors for the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance, a faculty and student network for advancing invention and innovation
Lung Center Studies—The Temple Lung Center heads the Mid-Atlantic Consortium for the Long-Term Oxygen Treatment Trial (LOTT), an NIH-funded, six-year nationwide study of the effectiveness and safety of long-term home oxygen therapy for COPD sufferers; conducts STATCOPE to determine if the drug simvastatin can reduce the frequency of COPD flare-ups or exacerbations; and COPD Gene to examine the genotypic and phenotypic expressions of exposure to tobacco smoke and COPD development
William Penn Foundation Grant—3-year $2.4 million grant to incubate a new organization to strengthen region's capacity for professionally produced public-interest journalism
Tools of the Mind— funded by National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Communication Science Professor Carol Hammer's work enhances children's language and self-regulation development
Public Health Law Research Project—national initiative led by Professor of Law Scott Burris to promote effective regulatory, legal and policy solutions to improve public health

Jazz@the Underground—Boyer College of Music and Dance Professor of Jazz Terrell Stafford began a new program of performances by faculty, students and guest artists to fill the void left by the closing of historic jazz venue Ortlieb's and to give jazz students a place to perform
