Richard Englert
Richard M. Englert is Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Professor of Educational Administration.
A graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was awarded a doctoral degree in Educational Administration in 1976, he also has a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Pepperdine University (1971) and a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from St. John’s College in California (1967).
He has extensive experience both in basic education as a classroom teacher and in higher education as a university administrator and professor. He was an elementary teacher and a special education teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1969 to 1974.
He began his leadership career at Temple as Assistant to the Dean and then as Associate Dean for Administration in the College of Education. He has been Chief of Staff to the President, Dean of the College of Education and Vice President for Administration. He has served as the Acting Director of Intercollegiate Athletics; Acting Dean of the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; Acting Chief Administrative Officer of the School of Podiatric Medicine and Interim Dean of the Graduate School; he was Interim Provost for the 2006-07 year. More recently, he was Deputy Provost and dean of the University College, led the task force on the future of Ambler and was deeply involved in the creation of the Academic Compass.
His scholarship, writing and teaching have focused on the areas of the administration of higher education, the politics of education and urban education.
Dr. Englert has also served on a number of professional, community and University boards, committees and task forces. For example, he is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Chester Community Charter School in the Chester-Upland School District in Pennsylvania.
