2010 Grammy nomination
An orchestral work commissioned by the Boyer College of Music and Dance and performed earlier this year by the Temple University Symphony Orchestra has been nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award.
The composition, "fourth stream...La Banda," for orchestra, jazz combo and solo trumpet, was written by former Boyer faculty member and 2009 Grammy-winner Bill Cunliffe. More than 300 other nominees were on the ballot in the "Best Instrumental Composition" category, with the top five announced on Dec. 1.

Enhanced Academic Advising
Temple implemented two programs focused on retention and time to graduation that involve strategic and targeted increases in the amount and the timeliness of interactions between academic advisors and students; Temple instituted a new multi-tiered career path to retain advisors; and committed funds to hire 10 new academic advisors over the next two years.

Record-Breaking Study Abroad Numbers
According to the Office of International Affairs, about 1,005 Temple students studied abroad in 2009-10, up more than 8 percent from 2008-09. With more students taking advantage of a growing menu of Temple programs (such as the semester abroad program in Oviedo, Spain, and new exchanges with Asian universities) and new funding opportunities (such as the Ann and Randy Hart Passport Scholarship and the Diamond Ambassadors Program), the number of Temple students who study abroad has tripled in a decade.

Philadelphia String Project
The Philadelphia String Project fills a gap in the local music education landscape by training the next generation of string performers and educators. Classes meet twice per week and are led by Boyer undergraduate students majoring in music education and performance. Participants include a mix of mostly third and fourth graders from Philadelphia schools.

Umami: The Fifth Taste
Think sweet, salty, sour or bitter and your favorite foods come to mind. Now, how about "Umami"?
Temple university biologist Greg Smutzer has designed a simple test to measure the five human tastes, including Umami. They're much like commercial breath strips but each of these edible pieces contains a small amount of taste stimulus on it.

Destination Temple
This Academic Strategic Compass (Academic Compass), which resulted from an 18-month collaborative planning process, is the next step in realizing a strategic plan to guide Temple over a 5-year period (2009-2014). The Compass provides an overview of the strategies we are and will use to reach our goals during a time when the college landscape is quickly changing.
Refer to the Inventory of Initiatives for insight into the milestones and metrics that benchmark the success of the plan. We look forward to continuing to work together as we map our new destiny.
