Political Science Honors Program
Students accepted into the Temple Honors Scholar Program may select Political Science as their field of concentration, thus becoming a member of the Political Science Honors Program.
Political Science Honors Director: Dr. Hawley Fogg-Davis hfd@temple.edu
University Honors Director: Dr. Ruth Ost rost@temple.edu
Goals
The Political Science Honors Program is designed to give highly motivated Political Science students the opportunity to take academically rigorous honors seminars with other honors students, and to acquire the skills necessary to undertake in-depth independent research on topics of interest. The Honors Program is excellent preparation for graduate school, and deepens the information literacy goals of the General Education requirement.
Requirements
Students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.6 and have completed at least 60 credit hours (typically the spring of sophomore year) to be eligible for the Honors Scholar Program. Accepted Honors Scholars who designate Political Science as their chosen concentration must complete a total of 6 upper-level honors seminars, two of which must be the Political Science Honors Jr./Sr. Capstone Seminar sequence of 3996/4996 and 3997/4997 . In these seminars students learn about research methodology, which they will need to design and execute the honors thesis requirement. Students may choose to complete their thesis during their junior or senior year. Either way, they should make arrangements to work with a faculty advisor who will then set a time frame for completion of the thesis. The completed thesis must be at least 8,000 words exclusive of footnotes and bibliography. The thesis can serve as the core of a student’s dossier as she or he applies for graduate school. We encourage students to take their 4 other honors seminars within Political Science, but students may also take outside honors seminars at the discretion of the Honors Director.
Funding and Support
Honors Students can apply for financial support to cover research related activities, such as visits to archives, travel to present scholarly papers etc, up to $2,000 through the Undergraduate Research Incentive Fund (http://www.temple.edu/vpus/programs_initiatives/URIF.htm). Funds are also available in the Diamond Research Scholars program (http://www.temple.edu/vpus/programs/initiatives/upperdivision/diamondresearchcholars.htm). Honors students are also encouraged to submit their completed thesis to the Library Prize for Undergraduate Research (http://library.temple.edu/prize/howtoapply.htm).
