A new mural depicting Galileo and Albert Einstein was unveiled March 1, 2005 for faculty and students in the lobby/lounge area of the physics department on the first floor of Barton Hall.

Artist Henry Martin (pictured, at left) painted the 37.5-foot by 22.5-foot mural, which was commissioned by department chair C.J. “Jeff” Martoff (right).

The scenes on the mural highlight the links between Galileo and Einstein through their theories and research into motion, relativity and time.

“It was a very interesting project,” Martin said. “Not having a scientific background, it was both instructive and artistic.”

Martoff said the lobby/lounge area is heavily used by students from varied backgrounds who attend classes in the large Barton Hall lecture rooms. He thought the mural would inspire physics and non-physics students alike and help show why physics is interesting
