Graduate Student Life
We have approximately thirty graduate students enrolled in our program. Graduate classes are small and permit extensive interaction with our faculty, thereby enabling the fullest development of the student's potential. Each full-time graduate student is given office space close to other students.
In addition to the regularly scheduled courses, there is a weekly departmental colloquium given by a physicist from another institution. There are also special lectures and seminars in Statistical Mechanics, Condensed Matter Physics, Relativity, Elementary Particle Physics, and Laser and Optical Science. These seminars are given by guest lecturers from other institutions as well as by our own faculty, visiting faculty, research associates, and our own graduate students.
In addition to the intellectual activities and experiences available on the Temple University campus, there are many opportunities for students to partake of the extensive intellectual and cultural activities offered by a dynamic metropolitan center. Philadelphia is one of the great cities of the United States, with a rich history and a full cultural life. Philadelphia is the home of the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, the Curtis School of Music and a host of other music centers. There are many fine museums, galleries, libraries, restaurants and historic sites. And Philadelphia is a great sports town, hosting professional teams for baseball, football, basketball, and hockey, and providing opportunities for individual participation in a wide variety of amateur sporting activities.
During the summer, various areas close to Philadelphia such as the Atlantic beaches, Chesapeake Bay, Pocono Mountains offer attractive areas for relaxation and recreation. An extensive system of public transportation makes access to various parts of the city and its surroundings reasonably easy.
Our Ph.D. graduates have excellent prospects for employment. They have obtained positions in colleges and universities, industry and the government, including institutions such as MIT, Boston University, Brown University, University of Illinois, IBM, RCA, General Electric Company, Bell Laboratories, Xerox Corporation, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab, CERN and the Naval Air Development Center.
