The Department of Physics provides a graduate program leading
to the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The
objective of the program is to assist the student in gaining an
understanding of physics sufficiently broad to form a basis for
independent research, as well as to give the student the experience
of doing significant research under the guidance of a mature scientist.
Graduate study is designed to represent the discipline as broadly
as possible and to enable the student to learn the principles
and general methods used in problem solving and in research. Both
theoretical and experimental approaches are therefore included
in the program. Areas of specialization are particle physics;
condensed matter physics; and atomic, molecular and optical physics.
