-Hosoe's Timeline-


1933- Eikoh Hosoe is born Toshiro Hosoe in Yonezawa, Yamagata prefecture on March 18, 1993

1933-1945- Educated primarily in Tokyo, except for an evacuation to Yonezawa during fire-bombing run 1944-45

1952- His photograph, Padie-Chan wins fist prize in the student group of the Fuji Photo Contest. The honor incites him to pursue photography seriously and later enroll at Tokyo College of photography.

1953- Joins the artist's group " Deokrato."

1954- Works as a freelance photographer after his graduation from the Tokyo College of Photography.

1956- First solo exhibition, " An American girl in Tokyo," a fictional photo-narrative, is very successful. The story is sold to the Chubu Nippon Radio Station and broadcast as a radio drama.

1957-1959- Invited by Tatsuo Fukushima to take part in " Eye of Ten," an annual photo exhibition in Tokyo.

1960- Hosoe, with Kikuji Kawada, Akira Sato, Akira Tanno, Ikko Narahara, and Shome Tomatsu, founds the photo agency VIVO.

1961- 1963- Photographs Yukio Mishima and designs his book, The Attach of Beauty. Their successful collaboration leads to a series of portraits of Mishima which are published as the book Barakei, translated into English as Killed by Roses ( Toyo: Shueisha, 1963). This book is highly acclaimed and wins an award from the Photo Critics Society.

1962- Marries Misako Imai.

1963- First son, Kenji, is born.

1964- Makes film with Kon Ichikawa for Olympic Games in Tokyo, directs the films Judo and Modern Pentathlon.

1970-1971- Collaborates with Mishima to publish newly designed version of Barakei. ( The English title is changed in this version to Ordeal by Roses.) However, before publication, Mishima commits suicide. This book is eventually published in 1971 by Shueisha.

1972- Meets Cole Weston on a trip to Northern California, and agrees to translate the Dayooks of Edward Weston into Japanese.

1973-1974- Teaches American students in workshops at Phoenix College, Arizona; Columbia College, Chicago; and in Yosemite, California.

1974- Collaborates with Nobuyoshi Araki, Masahisa Fukase, Daido Moriyama, Shomei Tomatsu and Noriyaki Yokosuka in the establishment of " The Poto Workshop School" in Tokyo.

1975- Is offered a professorship at Tokyo College of Photography. Hosoe accepts on the conditions that the college establish a gallery on campus and begin a collection of fine photographs.

1976-1984- Creates series of photographs of the architecture of Gaudi; which is published in the book The Cosmos of Gaudi.

1987- Travel to New York with his son, Kenji, for an intense workshop in platinum printing. He returns to Japan with a 20-by-24-inch hand-made camera, with which he has experimented in recent years.

1991-1998- Represented by Howard Greenberg Galler, New York. His show " Eikoh Hosoe: META" opens at the International Center of Photography/ Midtown, New York.

The show continues to travel through the year 2000.
