1932-bought first Leica
1935-studied film technology with Paul Strand, was camera assistant to Jean Renoir
1936-volunteered in the Spanish Civil War, made a documentary in Spain
1940-was returned to Germany as a prisoner of war
1947fonded the Magnum photo agency with Robert Capa, D. Szynim

1973-gave up photography to concentrate on drawing and painting
