The deaths occur again and again in Kenya. Individuals suspected of committing crimes -- innocent until proven guilty by all applicable law -- are killed by police officers. Officials say police shoot with just cause: suspects were trying to escape. But friends and family members of the victims, along with human rights monitors in the country, say the suspects were innocent and their deaths the result of a corrupt and reckless police force. The Kenya Human Rights Commission, early in 1997, implemented a grassroots campaign against police brutality. Kenyans mourned, cried, sang and staged sit-ins as police watched. |
