Supplies needed for Photography, 3401

35mm single lens reflex (SLR) camera

You will need a 35mm camera for use during the semester. You will need to have manual focus and control of the aperture and shutter speed. We have a few cameras available for rent on a first-come, first-serve basis to students in this class.

Black and White film

Black and White film is required for this course. You can use any brand name and or ASA film that you choose. My recommendation is Kodak Tri-X 400, Kodak TMAX 400 or 100, Ilford HP5 400 or Fuji Neopan 400.

Remember the film must be Black and White and be able to be processed in our photo lab. If you have questions, ask before you buy it. If you have any questions about film contact Dr. Trayes or the lab supervisor.

8x10 Photographic paper

All photos handed in during the semester must be 8x10 inches. Like film, you may choose any brand of paper you desire. I recommend Kodak Polycontrast III RC glossy or Ilford Multigrade IV deluxe RC glossy or pearl . Also you may use any of the fiber-based papers available. If you prefer another finish, such as matte or satin that is fine.

Mounting tissue

Mounting tissue is used to affix the photographic print to the mat board. Kodak and Seal are two of the more widely known manufactuers. Make sure the mounting tissue is compatible with the type of photographic paper you select.

Mat board

All prints that are handed in must be mounted on 11x14 BLACK mat board. You may buy large sheets and cut them down to size. This is much more economical than buying precut 11x14 boards.

Negative preservers

Printfile makes 35mm negative sleeves to keep your negatives organized and clean. You can get them for strips of 5 or 6 frames, however the 5 frames fits in a standard notebook better.

3-Ring Binder

You will need a hard three ring binder to keep your negatives and contact sheets in.
