The Undergraduate Honors Program in Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy has approved a new Undergraduate Honors Program. Details are as follows.

Admission Requirements

• Students will apply and be admitted in the Fall semester of their junior year.
  
  
• Students must have a departmental GPA of 3.5 and an overall GPA of 3.3 at the time of application.
  
  
• Students must have completed the following requirements for the philosophy major (or in the case of transfer students, equivalents as approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies):
  
  
• 0100 Introduction to Philosophy
  
  
• C066 Logic
  
  
• Either 0161 History of Philosophy: Greek or 0172 History of Philosophy: Modern
  
  
• Students must complete and submit the application form, which will be made available in the department and online.
  
  
• Students must supply the name and signature of one professor in the Philosophy Department as a reference on their application. Transfers should provide a reference from a philosophy professor at their old institution.

Program Requirements

• Students must successfully complete H298 (Honors Senior Seminar). Students may enroll in this class only after consultation with their advisors.
  
  
• Students must successfully complete Honors Thesis, 0299 in their senior year.
  
  
• Students must present all or some of the honors thesis in a public forum.

Completion

• Students who have completed the above requirements, have a 3.5 GPA in Philosophy, and have an overall GPA of 3.3 are entitled to graduate with the notation “Distinction in Philosophy.”

The Undergraduate Honors Program in Philosophy will be overseen by the Director of the Honors Program in Philosophy and the Department's Honors Program Committee. The program is currently under final review by the College's Committee on Instruction.
