Applying for a Leave of Absence from the MS in RAQA

U.S. Students

If you are a matriculated student in the RAQA master's program (which means you have applied and been accepted into the MS degree program), you are expected to two courses per year in any semester (fall, spring or summer).

If you need to take more than two semesters off (due to work obligations, family emergencies, relocation or extensive travel, etc.), you should apply for a Leave of Absence (LOA) with the Graduate School. That ensures that you remain a matriculated student during your absence and will not need to reapply for admission when you return to your studies.

If you are absent for more than two years, you will be required to submit a new application to the MS when you return to the program. Only the application form and current application fee will be required, but there are no exceptions to this rule.

Step-by-step directions for applying to a Leave of Absence:
1. Log in to the TUportal.

2. Click Enrollment Services under the TUapplications heading.

3. Click Services.

4. Click Leave of Absence.

5. Complete and submit the form.

International Students on an F-1 Visa

International students on an F-1 visa are expected to be full-time students, who complete the MS in RAQA in no more than 4 semesters spread over two years (three courses each fall semester and three courses each spring semester).  There is no requirement to take courses in summer semesters, though international students may do so.

Any leave of absence from the program must be made in writing and should not extend beyond one semester.  If an F-1 visa student misses a fall semester, the student must return to Temple on a full-time basis (3 courses) the following spring.  If an F-1 student misses a spring semester, the student must return to Temple on a full-time basis (3 courses) the following summer or fall.  A maximum of one leave of absence is permitted to remain matriculated in the program.

When a student returns from a leave of absence, the student must comply with any new policies established by the School during that absence.

Policy for RAQA International Graduate Students established  Fall 2018:
All international students are expected to attend courses at the Fort Washington campus.  This includes online courses and online exams, which must be taken in the Fort Washington Computer Lab (Room 5).  At least one weeknight course must be taken on campus each semester.
