Students Shine in Florida -- Win Numerous Awards at APhA Meeeting

Annual Meeting and Expo - Orlando, Florida - April 1-5


The Temple University School of Pharmacy student chapter of APhA was well represented in Orlando, Florida. 32 students and 5 faculty representatives were sponsored by the University to attend this Annual Meeting.

During the meeting, Temple’s student chapter was recognized by APhA for outstanding achievement in Pharmacy including 3 regional or national awards  

1: Region 2 winners: Temple was awarded The Outstanding Achievement Award for Operation Immunization.

a.       Pharmacy students distributed fliers promoting meningitis vaccines to high school seniors throughout the Philadelphia School System

b.      Pharmacy students visited a maternity clinic promoting awareness of mothers taking an active role in getting their newborns vaccinated

c.       Pharmacy students developed and had a billboard placed on a major thoroughfare through Philadelphia promoting awareness of the need for vaccinations

2. National winners: Temple was awarded one of ten $2000.00 Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) grants to actively promote a Needle Exchange Program.

a.       Students will promote the importance of decreasing blood borne diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis at Prevention Point in Philadelphia through a needle exchange program.

b.      The grant is a 304B designed to help underserved populations in Philadelphia

3. National winners: Temple was awarded The Most Improved Chapter of 2003-2004.

a.       An application describing the reasons why Temple was most deserving was submitted describing the following activities:

                                                                           i.      Temple increased membership in APhA by 80 %

                                                                         ii.      The chapter was restructured to include specialized committees

                                                                        iii.      Temple had the most students in its recent history compete in the Patient Counseling Competition

                                                                       iv.      Temple students actively participated in Operation Diabetes and Immunization

                                                                         v.      Temple’s chapter helped organize the first White Coat Ceremony for incoming Pharm.D. Candidates

                                                                       vi.      Temple’s chapter instituted a “Big Brother/Big Sister Program” for first year Pharm.D. Candidates

                                                                      vii.      Temple’s chapter president, Irinny Hanna, ran for national office of APhA
