Dean Doukas announced that the cGMP Facility, under the direction of Dr. David Lebo, is participating in a multicenter, 1200 patient, NIH-sponsored clinical trial entitled the "STATCOPE" Study. The object of this study is to evaluate whether simvastatin improves health outcomes of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The study currently involves 16 centers across the United States; additional funding for expanding the study to Canadian clinics is pending at this time. Dr. Lebo has received $312,000 to support the manufacture of clinical supplies during the 3-year term of the project, the first batch of which was recently shipped out for distribution to the various centers. Dr. Michael Jacobs facilitated the collaboration between Dr. Gerard Criner, Head of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at TUH, and Dr. Lebo.
