Dr. Magid Abou-Gharbia Appointed as Laura H. Carnell Professor



Magid Abou-Gharbia

Dr. Magid Abou-Gharbia has been appointed a Laura H. Carnell Professor, Temple University’s highest professorial honorific, effective July 1, 2013. This appointment follows upon the recommendations of Provost Hai-Lung Dai and President Neil D. Theobold, with the concurrence of the Temple University Board of Trustees.


Carnell Professorships are awarded by Temple University to faculty of the various schools and colleges in recognition of: their outstanding achievements in research; as leaders in their respective fields of endeavor; and, for the distinction that they bring to their school or college by having received major national and international awards during their career.


Dr. Abou-Gharbia is widely considered one of the most successful and respected leaders in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery worldwide. He has received numerous awards in recognition of his outstanding achievements, some of which are listed below:


  • Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemists (FRSC)
  • American Institute of Chemists (AIC) Chemical Pioneer Award
  • American Chemical Society (ACS) Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry
  • ACS Division of Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame
  • ACS Heroes of Chemistry Award
  • Fellow of the American Chemical Society
