As part of an American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) outreach initiative, graduate students of Temple University student chapter reached out to a local school - Radnor High School - on May 23rd 2011. The aim of this outreach initiative was to emphasize the importance of science and research with the extended goal of fostering interest in pharmaceutical sciences in the young audience.

Drug discovery and development paradigm was explained to them by explaining contribution of different disciplines involved in this process. A brief introduction was given by the faculty advisor, Dr. Swati Nagar, followed by graduate students Zhan (Vickie) Wang and Harshini Neelakantan explaining the roles of medicinal chemistry and pharmacology in drug discovery. The progress of the active compound through formulation and pharmacokinetic development was highlighted by Biji Palliyil and Satish Sharan. Amir Youssef and Obioma Chikwendu introduced the role of clinical trials and pharmacogenomics in the drug development process.
The presentation was followed by a short Q & A session. This gave the sophomore high school students a panoramic view of career options in the pharmaceutical industry. The outreach event turned out to be a great success, exemplified by the intriguing questions, engaging interaction and happy faces on receiving the goody bags. This event helped the graduate students to inculcate a sense of team spirit and their responsibility as budding scientists toward society.
This event would not have been successful without the coordinated efforts of Dr. Kenneth Korzekwa and Dr. Swati Nagar (faculty of School of Pharmacy, Temple University), support of Aneesh Argikar for technical assistance and help of Mayuri Narvekar, Manali Phadke and Vaishnavi Ganti.
