Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research

About

The Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research was dedicated on May 14, 2009 and is currently home to a talented and enthusiastic group of scientists.  The team is dedicated to facilitating collaborative research efforts to support the discovery and development of novel therapeutic agents to improve the health and life of patients.  The Moulder Center serves as a multidisciplinary research hub for the further development of scientific discoveries identified by Temple University faculty and scientists, enabling their research to move beyond the lab and into the broader research community.  In addition, the Moulder Center’s unique capabilities and experienced scientists actively pursue collaborative research opportunities with external collaborators in the academic community and industrial partners both in the U.S. and abroad.

The Moulder Center also provides a unique opportunity for Temple University students.  Students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels are provided with the opportunity to work alongside experienced drug discovery scientists, learn modern techniques required for the successful identification of the next generation of therapies, and play a role in cutting edge research collaborations.  As a member of the Moulder team, students gain firsthand experience with important tools such as parallel synthesis, high throughput screening, molecular biology, and pharmacokinetics.  They gain a unique perspective on the drug discovery process and the importance of multidisciplinary, collaborative research required for success in the modern scientific community.

Moulder Center research efforts in addiction, withdrawal, Alzhiemer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and anti-viral agents are supported through a variety of funding sources including funded grants, generous gifts from distinguished alumni, and industrial partnerships.

Mission

  • Drug Design and Lead Optimization: Synthesis of small molecule therapeutics in multiple disease areas as lead drug candidates and/or as chemical probes to test biological hypotheses in an effort to increase understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological processes relevant to drug discovery
  • Facilitate collaborative research, within Temple University and with external collaborators in the US and abroad
  • Bridge the gap between pre-clinical and clinical research in support of Translational Medicine
  • Provide students, faculty, and future researchers with training and a good understanding of modern drug discovery and development

History

The center was founded with a generous gift from School of Pharmacy
alumni Mr. Lonnie Moulder and his wife, Sharon. Both were graduates of
the Class of 1980. In addition, research seed funds were made available by the Provost of Temple University to recruit a distinguished drug discovery leader to spearhead the center's efforts. Dr. Magid Abou-Gharbia, a well known leader in drug discovery, was recruited in 2008 from Wyeth Pharmaceutical to be the Director of the center.
