COURSE DESCRIPTION: Facilitating Dialogue and Action with Diverse Groups is co-taught by Novella Keith, Temple University Associate Professor of Urban Education, and Charles Rojzman, an internationally-known consultant and creator of Transformational Social Therapy (TST).  TST offers an action-oriented model for intergroup relations. The theory and practice of TST bring together social and political psychology, group dynamics, critical theory, and organizational development. This course will take students through the unique TST approach to working with groups with a history of conflict based on such factors as race, gender, class, sexual orientation, religion and national origin.  Participants will develop an essential skill for intergroup facilitation: understanding and working with the emotional life of groups. The relevant knowledge includes (a) the social and professional “masks” people wear; (b) engaging fears, hatreds, and prejudices; and (c) psychoanalytical dynamics, including projection and transference. COURSE#1 JANUARY SCHEDULE: 1/22/10: 5:30pm-9:30pm; 1/23/10: 9am-5pm; 1/24/10: 10am-4pm; 1/29/10: 5:30pm-9:30pm; 1/30/10: 9am-5pm; 1/31/10: 10am-4pm; and 2/6/10: 10am-4pm. Coursework and requirements integrate academic and experiential learning.  Early registration is strongly recommended. Students will be provided a syllabus, including reading list, on registration. Attendance at all class sessions is required.

CERTIFICATE: This is the first course in a proposed four-course graduate Certificate in Diversity Facilitation (currently in preparation and review). The Certificate in Diversity Facilitation (CDF) is jointly sponsored by Temple University’s College of Education and Office of Multicultural Affairs. Both the course and certificate will be open to Temple students and employees, as well as professionals interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in diversity facilitation.

The other 3 courses being proposed as part of the CDF include: Course 2: Violence and Conflict: 1) differentiating violence from constructive conflict; and 2) transforming intergroup and intra-group violence into constructive conflict. Course 3: Personal and Societal Transformation: 1) Identifying the differences between personal and institutional/collective blocks and obstacles to cooperation; and  2) analyzing the particular constraints to collective group action in a given social network, neighborhood, organization or other social setting. Course 4:  Process and Stages in Facilitating Inter-Group Collaboration: 1) facilitating group process through the phases of group formation, including accepting and engaging with necessary conflicts; 2) allowing authentic information to circulate in the group, thus creating a “collective intelligence”; and 3) applying the group’s collective intelligence toward the resolution of common problems.

Official approval for the Certificate is in process. Under the present plan, the three additional courses will be taught sequentially in March and July. VIEW ENTIRE CERTIFICATE COURSE OFFERINGS AND SCHEDULE

COST AND REGISTRATION There are three ways of participating in the proposed Certificate in Diversity Facilitation (CDF): a) Graduate course credits with or without the certificate, or b) Certificate without graduate course credits. Regardless of participation level, registrants must attend all classes. However, fees for participation will vary based on course status. Those seeking graduate course credits must formally register for the course.

For non-Temple employees, the cost for a graduate course is $1770 for in-state and $2583 for out-of-state students. Additional fees for CDF will be announced shortly. For non-Temple employees who are not seeking graduate course credit, each course will cost $1200. Continuing professional education credits will be available for participants not seeking graduate credit.  Temple employees can apply their tuition remission benefit toward the cost of the courses.
