Emphasis: New technologies for collaborative teaching and learning interactions.

Dissertation:  Computer Mediated Videoconferencing: A Technology in Evolution in Distance Education. The dissertation examined the impact of desktop videoconferencing on student interaction effectiveness and learning outcomes.  By comparing student and teacher satisfaction with their video interactions, this study contributed to the understanding of issues of why, when, and how desktop videoconferencing should be used for a computer-mediated communication (CMC) in the academic environment.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT


In order to address a university need of building faculty
capacity for online teaching, developed a 20 hour virtual program
which has been extremely successful among our faculty members .

85 participants have attended this program in the past year.

    Responsible for providing leadership to the University distance learning and summer programs initiatives. In addition to responsibilities in planning, budgeting, policy development, and department reports and communications, I am responsible for distance education curriculum development, student recruitment, marketing, research, publications, grant writing, technology evaluation and acquisition, operational budget, and assessment activities.

    Course: Organizational Communication (3 credit). Course offered in a blended solution, providing students with the opportunity to engage in public speaking activities in classs on campus and also at virtual settings.

    Course: Communication in Organizations (4 credits). Throughout the semester, undergraduate and graduate students were exposed to multimedia technology; audio and video synchronous interaction with the instructor and also exploring various course related materials via the Blackboard Course Management tool.

    Course: Organizational Communications (4 credits). This course is required to all students within this major and is offered once a year. Although the course meetings were conducted face-to-face, I have adopted the Blackboard course management tool to supplement my weekly course materials and interaction with students.

    As assistant director, I assisted in the direction of the program’s online and videoconferencing courses. I became involved with student and faculty orientations about the technologies in use for online teaching and learning. In addition to being part of the assessment team that design the student online assessment tools, I developed strategies and support services to promote better information about the online and videoconferencing characteristics

    While working on my doctoral degree, I taught multiple recitation sessions for the course Introduction to Mass Media and Communication Theories. As a teacher assistant, my responsibilities also included assignment preparation and exam grading.

    While primarily hired to assist the Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Studies in all his academic initiatives, I was also privileged to have the opportunity to work directly with the Vice-Provost for Graduate Studies (Dr. Eurides Britto, former Brazil’s Secretary of Education), and assist her in the curricular development of the University’s Master Education Program on New Educational Technologies.

    While participating in a one year International Exchange Program (IPX) I received training in early intervention strategies and technologies not yet existent in Brazil. In addition, this opportunity also exposed me to a multicultural and diverse clientele and special needs support systems.
