Welcome
to Temple University! I hope your
transition to Temple University
and the city of Philadelphia is
a pleasant and happy one.
This is to advise you that Temple University requires all international students in Nonimmigrant Student (F-1 or J-1) status to maintain health insurance that meets certain minimum standards as determined by the United States Department of State. The minimum health insurance coverage as determined by the Department of State is
- A maximum deductible of U.S.$500 per accident or illness
- Payment of at least 75% of covered expenses
- Medical benefits of at least U.S.$50,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation benefits of at least U.S.$7,500
- Medical evacuation benefits of at least U.S.$10,000
All international students in Nonimmigrant Student (F-1 or J-1) status are required either to enroll officially in the University-sponsored program or to waive out of this requirement providing proof of comparable "outside" coverage to the Office of Benefits.
International students in Nonimmigrant Student (F-1 or J-1) status will be charged U.S.$398.16 on their Fall Semester, 2005, and Spring Semester, 2006, tuition and fees bills. This charge represents U.S.$368.16 for the school-sponsored CompSelect health insurance program and U.S.$30.00 for the Medical Evacuation and Repatriation program; this provides coverage at the single student rate for a six-month period. Individuals who wish to add their dependents to their insurance policies may do so by enrolling them at the time of enrollment and will be required to pay an additional premium.
N.B.: Paying this fee alone does not meet the University's requirement. To have insurance coverage, all students must, in addition to paying the fee, enroll in a health insurance plan offered through the Office of Benefits or waive this insurance.
To enroll in the School Sponsored Health Insurance:
You must complete an on-line enrollment application via the OWLnet between August 1, 2005, and September 30, 2005. All enrollments are for a twelve-month period. The effective dates of coverage are fromSeptember 1, 2005 through August 31, 2006. You must re-enroll each September to continue coverage.
To waive the School Sponsored Health Insurance:
You must complete and submit to the University Office of Benefits an application to waive the University sponsored plan and provide proof of "outside" coverage that meets the minimum standards as determined by the United States Department of State (as noted above). All waiver forms must be submitted to and approved by the University Office of Benefits in in order to receive a credit of the premium on your tuition bill. Waivers form must be received by the Office of Benefits no later than September 30, 2005.
Enrollment and waiver instructions and forms are available on the Student Insurance web site <http://www.temple.edu/hr/si/menu.html>, in the University’s Office of Benefits, or the Office of International Services.
Please remember that this
health insurance policy was enacted
to minimize interruption of a
student's studies that may result
from the financial burden of unexpected
medical expenses. Temple University
joins a long list of comparable
educational institutions that
have enacted similar health insurance
requirements for F-I and J-1 students.
Further information on the mandatory
health insurance requirement will
be provided at the mandatory International
Student Orientation. And for additional information, please visit the Student Insurance web site at <http://www.temple.edu/hr/studentinsurance.html> or contact the Office of Human Resources/Benefits by telephone at (215) 204-1321.
Best
wishes for a successful and healthy
year at Temple University!
Sincerely,
Martyn
