Flight

Directed by Andrew Allen
University of Washington, USA

What goes soaring upward, must come spiraling down. This extremely condensed history of aviation follows man's earnest desire to reach the skies and his inevitable exploitation of this beautiful realm as a toll for destruction.

Filmmaker Bio

Andrew Allen
Andrew was born and raised in the small, rural town of Bethel, Alaska, knowing life at its most fundamental. This unique environment provided inspiration for many avenues of artistic expression from painting and sculpting to making music and films.

In school, Andrew attended the University of Washington, graduating in June 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design while also completing over 15 short films - some as school projects, others highly experimental.

With the birth of his production company, Polymix Media, in which he heads a small group of filmmakers and designs, Andrew has successfully combined his love for video with that of design. Push For Signal (Polymix's first) has been surprisingly successful, screening at the 32nd Seattle International Film Festival, the Anchorage International Film Festival, and the Temecula Valley International Film Festival, as well as other festivals in the Seattle area. Polymix's latest release, Flight, now just in its fledgling state, has begun to attract international attention.

Today, Andrew continues to pool his diverse creative abilities toward combining new forms of expression with unique contemporary perspectives to create unforgettable experiences.

[Director's Statement]

To me, Flight represents the grand collision of many things. First, it represents a collision of memories. History is a series of events strung together (often catastrophic) similar to the way our own memories work. We don't see the past as a continuous line of activity but as a series of important events. Flight recreates the history of aviation using only those "important events" such as World War II combat pilots, the Challenger explosion, and the September 11th attacks. Second, the film represents the collision between man and nature. Within even our most innocent intentions lies the innate lust for corruption and greed. And lastly, Flight signifies the successful collision of two of my greatest passions: design + film. This is a collision that I hope will continue to open up new avenues of artistic innovation in the field of mass communication.
