Filmmaker Bio

Mika Ferris
Mika Ferris was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduating from The University of California at Santa Barbara Film Studies Department in 1995 he went on to work with several career documentary artists. Mika Ferris worked as an Editor and Associate Editor on Step by Step, Woman by Woman and The Fragile Promise of Choice by Academy-Award nominated filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman and as an Associate Producer on Julie Gustafson’s Desire which explored high-school students in New Orleans. From 2000 through 2002 Mika produced and directed The Free School which explores The New Orleans Free School's 30 year evolution from a private experimental "hippie" school, with 29 students in 1971, to an alternative public elementary school presently serving over 300 predominately low-income minority students. Currently Mika is a Radio, Television and Film Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the University of North Texas.

[Director's Statement]

Over the years I have participated in a variety of both fiction and documentary projects. In my documentary work I strive to relay the reality I experience to an audience. Because documentary can create such powerful reactions, I want to always present the most accurate portrayal possible of a subject onscreen. Though the use of close-up videography, and insightful one-to-one interviews, my hope is that the subject's experience is transformed onto the screen for the audience. By focusing on documentary I hope to continue to grow individually and as a producer/director, always learning from my surroundings and interactions with others.
