The World, Naked as a Jaybird

Winner: 2nd Place Animation

Directed by Tiina Treasure
University of Central Florida, USA

THE WORLD, NAKED AS A JAYBIRD is a stop motion animated short which embraces absurdist black comedy to illustrate the destructive nature of humanity.

The story revolves around Edith, a young girl who accidentally survives a massive atomic bombing. Left alone, with her entire world (literally) destroyed she goes on a journey to seek humanity, comfort and a new home. Instead, she finds melancholy, solace and several snails all going the opposite direction.

Using the whimsy of collage-style animation to perpetrate an inherently dark subject matter THE WORLD, NAKED AS A JAYBIRD blends various genres to attempt to illustrate a fraction of the strength and darkness in all of us.

Director's Statement
I made The World, Naked as a Jaybird because one night she got in my head and she wouldn't leave till it was over and done with.

This is a film that I made, because I had too. Something beckoned me to this project even though I had no prior skills as an animator and no logical reason to make this film in a school which sponsored live action narrative, however I suppose I made it because some part of me knew that this was the truest story I could tell.

The journey was harrowing- working with myself, by myself, in my bedroom with a bolex and an awful lot of scrap paper- I made this film out of nothing. I wanted to make a film that had virtually no middle man, a film which had the shortest possible creative distance from my vision to completion. By writing the film, directing it, animating it I believe I have sucessfully made the most "me" film to date. With the exception of the narration by Bryan Hayes this film is mine, and if it suceeds it's my sucess and if it fails it's mine as well.

No scapegoats, no ulterior motives- it's just mine. And that feels very nice.
