Sbarro Renovation

Ryan S. Brandenberg /Temple University

Biology Professor Antonio Giordano (left), founder and president of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO), gives Pennsylvania State Representatives Mario Civera (center) and Samuel H. Smith a tour of the new $3 million state-of-the-art Temple/SHRO bio-life research center. The new center was dedicated during ceremonies yesterday afternoon.

Located on the fourth floor of Temple Biology-Life Sciences Building, the research center will be home to 60 researchers and 10 administrative staff and will help enhance basic science research into chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The center includes 20,000 square feet of new wet and dry labs, administrative offices and a medical library, as well as workspaces for visiting international scientists. A unique feature of the center is its solid phase peptide synthesis and analysis facility, which offers a wide range of customized services for the production, synthesis and analysis of peptides.

Civera and Smith helped to secure a $1.5 million grant to SHRO from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which was matched by Temple through the College of Science and Technology. SHRO is a non-profit charitable research organization that supports the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine in Temple’s College of Science and Technology.

Also attending the dedication was President Ann Weaver Hart, College of Science and Technology Dean Hai-Lung Dai and Philadelphia Archbishop Cardinal Justin Rigali.
